Authorities have identified the shooting suspect as Brian Schnurr, 37, who was previously married to Durfey. Following the alleged shooting, Schnurr reportedly fled the scene in a blue Dodge Challenger, taking their two children, both under the age of four, with him. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the children may have witnessed the traumatic event before their father drove away.

The Marana Police Department launched an immediate search for Schnurr and the vehicle. They later located the car near North Silverbell Road, where the two children were found unharmed inside. Officials confirmed that the children are the offspring of the deceased couple.
In a subsequent search of the nearby desert area, officers discovered Schnurr deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have confirmed that the incident is being treated as a murder-suicide.
Both Durfey and Schnurr were known figures in their community; he worked as a local chiropractor, while she was a licensed counsellor. According to court records, Durfey had filed for divorce in July 2025, indicating that the couple had undergone a tumultuous separation preceding this tragic event.
Local residents expressed their shock and sadness about the incident. Longtime neighbour Charles Wipperman commented on the alarming nature of the shooting, stating, “Anytime somebody passes away, it’s sad. Whether it’s a friend or a family member, when someone is murdered, no matter who it is, that is horrible.”
Authorities have described the investigation as ongoing and are seeking any further information related to the case. Residents who may have details about the incident are urged to contact the Marana Police Department.
The loss of Mikaela Durfey has sent ripples of sorrow throughout the local community, highlighting the devastating effects of domestic violence and its far-reaching consequences. The presence of young children in such a harrowing situation adds an additional layer of tragedy, prompting discussions about the support and resources available for families affected by domestic strife.
As this investigation continues, many are left grappling with the questions surrounding such an unimaginable act of violence, and the impact it will have on the surviving children who will face an uncertain future after this heart-wrenching event.
