A tragic incident at a paper mill in Longview, Washington, has resulted in one confirmed fatality and has left numerous workers injured and missing. The accident took place on Tuesday, May 26, at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company facility, where a chemical implosion occurred due to the rupture of a tank containing a white liquid used in paper production.

According to the Longview Fire Department (LFD), the incident was classified as a “hazardous materials incident.” Following the explosion, one individual succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospital, though their identity has yet to be disclosed. In addition to the deceased, nine individuals, including eight employees and a firefighter, sustained injuries and are receiving medical care. Initial reports suggested that several victims suffered from chemical burns, but the full extent of their injuries remains unclear.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by hazardous conditions at the site, with officials confirming that nine other workers are still unaccounted for. Families of the missing individuals have been notified, and the community is anxiously awaiting further developments. Battalion Chief Mike Gorsuch of the LFD stated that the identification of victims would take place after the formal notification of their families is complete.
Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein addressed the media, indicating that search and rescue operations had not yielded any survivors as of the latest updates. “At the moment, we are not aware of any rescues that are yet to be made,” Goldstein reported during a press conference. The complexity of the recovery efforts stems from ongoing safety concerns surrounding the site, particularly due to the instability of the ruptured tank.
Prior to the explosion, it was estimated that the damaged tank contained approximately 900,000 gallons of white liquor. Subsequently, it was determined that around 90,000 gallons of the chemical may still be present in the tank, which has raised alarms among emergency personnel. Although authorities have assured the community that there is currently no threat to the public, the precarious state of the tank presents significant risks for first responders operating in the area.
Efforts to stabilise the tank are a priority, with emergency teams working to reinforce the structure and remove any remaining liquid. “How that gets stabilised is what our primary goal is,” Goldstein remarked. “Once we can stabilise the tank, we can then access the victims we are able to locate.” The goal remains to ensure that every worker is returned to their families, providing them with the closure they deserve.
In response to the unfolding situation, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson announced that the Washington National Guard’s Civil Support Team has been mobilised to assist with air monitoring at the scene. Furthermore, the National Guard’s Homeland Response Force is on standby to aid in the search and recovery efforts in what is being deemed a contaminated environment, as well as to assist with mass decontamination processes.
The governor expressed his condolences via social media, stating, “I’m deeply saddened to hear that there have been fatalities. My thoughts are with the workers and their families, and with the first responders.” He also confirmed that the Department of Labor and Industries will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain the cause and prevent future occurrences.
In the community, vigils are underway, where residents have been gathering to show support for the affected families and remember the victim. Electric candles and flowers have been placed near the site as a poignant reminder of the tragedy that has struck. As recovery operations continue, the hope remains that all missing personnel will be accounted for and brought home safely.
This incident has not only raised concerns about occupational safety in chemical plants but has also highlighted the need for stringent safety measures to ensure the protection of workers handling hazardous materials. In the wake of this tragic event, a comprehensive review of safety protocols will be critical in safeguarding against similar incidents in the future.
