Soft Cell, the iconic British synthpop duo, has announced a summer tour in the United States alongside fellow musical legends, the Human League and Alison Moyet. As their signature hit “Tainted Love” approaches its 45th anniversary, they also prepare to release their final studio album, *Danceteria,* on September 4.

The partnership between Marc Almond and the late Dave Ball has made an indelible mark on the music landscape since the duo’s inception in the late 1970s. Initially, the pair contemplated recording “The Night,” a track by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, before serendipitously choosing their now-classic cover of Gloria Jones’ “Tainted Love.” Almond reminisced, “Dave loved ’60s obscure soul records, which in the UK we called ‘Northern Soul,’ played in nightclubs at all-night events. We wanted to select a song that was unexpected for an electronic band.”
Released in July 1981, “Tainted Love” quickly ascended to number one on the UK charts and became a major hit in the United States the following year. The track, alongside the Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me,” dominated the music scene in Britain that year, selling exceptionally well. The excitement of performing these beloved anthems together has led to the Generations tour, which commences on June 2 in San Diego.
Reflecting on the tour, Almond commented on the synergy between the acts, stating, “Soft Cell got involved with the Generations Tour because of the fantastic response we received from our previous tour with Simple Minds and Modern English. I was thrilled at the prospect of finally sharing a stage with the Human League, a band that inspired us significantly when we formed.”
Almond has previously collaborated with the Human League on stage, but this tour marks the first time he will perform with Soft Cell. He expressed, “To me, it feels like a full circle moment. The Human League’s influence on us cannot be overstated. Touring with Alison Moyet is also exciting; she is incredibly talented, and I’ve always admired her work.”
Soft Cell’s upcoming tour carries a profound sentiment, especially following the passing of Dave Ball in 2025. Almond shared the impact Ball’s death had on him, remembering their time together at university and noting, “Due to Dave’s illness, his travel was restricted, and he could only perform at UK shows. It feels odd to continue without him, especially after sharing such a deep connection.”
The forthcoming album *Danceteria* holds additional significance as it was the last project Ball worked on before he passed away. Almond described the album as a tribute to Ball’s enduring musical legacy. He noted, “It was a surprise for me to receive a file of his new compositions about a year and a half ago. I felt inspired and aimed to create an album that captures the essence of early ’80s New York.”
History played a crucial role in the album’s creation, with its name derived from a famed nightclub in New York City where Soft Cell recorded their debut album, *Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret*. Almond remarked, “Danceteria represents a love letter to New York and the impact it had on us as artists. It pays homage to the city where we explored our identity and creativity.”
As the anticipation builds for *Danceteria,* Almond expressed that Ball was enthusiastic about the album before his untimely passing. “He listened to it for the first time just two days before he died and was eager to promote it. His excitement made the loss all the more difficult to bear,” he shared.
“Tainted Love,” which recently surpassed a billion streams on Spotify, continues to remain a staple across radio stations worldwide. Reflecting on its enduring legacy, Almond stated, “We never expected the song to resonate as it has. It remains a thrill to know it’s still loved and celebrated decades later.”
While the duo initially disbanded in 1984, they have maintained a sporadic reunion over the decades, much to the delight of fans. In addition to his work with Soft Cell, Almond has also embarked on a solo project, collaborating with musician Barry Adamson. “Working with someone like Barry, who views my music through a different lens, has provided an exciting new perspective,” he explained.
As Soft Cell prepares for their tour and the release of *Danceteria*, the legacy of Marc Almond and the memory of Dave Ball continue to resonate within the music community, promising fans an unforgettable experience as they celebrate this landmark moment in synthpop history.
