A West Virginia woman has been charged in connection with the tragic death of her daughter, Ayla Wind, following a search that began when the young mother was reported missing. Staci Wind, aged 50, was taken into custody on Saturday at her home in Richwood, just days after she claimed her daughter had vanished without a trace.

Ayla Wind, who was 26 years old and a mother to a toddler, was last seen on May 15. Her sibling, Courtney Juan, stated that Ayla had mentioned she was heading to the lake with friends before she disappeared. The last confirmed sighting of her was at a gas station, where she was reportedly purchasing snacks. Courtney expressed disbelief that Ayla would neglect to check in with her child or her partner, highlighting the regular communication they maintained.
Police were alerted to Ayla’s disappearance when Staci Wind filed a report with the Richwood police on May 18. However, just four days later, on May 22, search efforts led to a grim discovery; Ayla’s charred remains were located buried in a shallow grave at a water reservoir in Greenbrier County.

The investigation took a significant turn when law enforcement found not only Ayla’s remains but also a burn pit nearby that contained human bones. Additional evidence at the scene included a cellphone matching descriptions of Ayla’s phone and a manual for a child booster seat. The manual was later found to correspond with a car seat identified at Staci Wind’s home. Police believe the ferns placed on the grave were used to obscure the site.
Following the discovery of Ayla’s remains, officers executed a search warrant at the home shared by Staci and Ayla. According to the West Virginia State Police, significant blood evidence was discovered throughout the residence. This included a cut-up mattress, allegedly disposed of by Staci, that was found to be bloodied, along with bloodstains on the walls of Ayla’s room.

Staci Wind has been charged with both first and second-degree murder, as confirmed by online court records. Remarkably, despite the evidence against her, she has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Investigators have indicated that more charges could potentially be forthcoming as the investigation continues to unfold.
The local community has rallied to support Ayla’s family in the wake of her tragic death. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover expenses related to her memorial and to provide support for her young child, who now faces life without their mother.
As police delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Ayla Wind’s death, officers are working to establish a clearer motive. The case has left many questions unanswered, and investigators are keen to uncover the full story behind this heartbreaking incident.
Ayla Wind’s family and friends remember her as a devoted mother, and the loss has sent ripples of sorrow throughout the community. As authorities continue to collect evidence in the case, the pursuit of justice for Ayla is expected to remain a priority for local law enforcement.
