A tragic incident occurred over the Memorial Day weekend at Donner Lake, California, where 36-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia-Gutierrez drowned after entering the water without a flotation device. The Truckee Police Department has confirmed that Garcia-Gutierrez, hailing from Lancaster, California, was involved in recreational activities on a pontoon boat when the mishap took place.

Emergency services were alerted at approximately 4:40 p.m. on May 24, following reports of a missing man who had been seen struggling to remain afloat in the lake. The police promptly initiated water rescue operations, but efforts were soon hampered by adverse conditions.
According to police statements, Garcia-Gutierrez jumped into the lake for a swim but found himself in trouble. The wind caused the pontoon boat to drift away, leaving him unable to reach safety. Tragically, he was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time.

The situation escalated quickly, leading authorities to conclude that Garcia-Gutierrez had drowned. Despite challenges posed by dwindling daylight, search and rescue teams continued to scour the water, supported by favourable wind conditions that enabled the search to continue into the night.
Around 9:20 p.m., rescuers located Garcia-Gutierrez’s body submerged in the lake. Following the recovery, the body was handed over to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, which functions as the County Coroner.
The Truckee Police Department expressed their gratitude to several agencies that collaborated during the rescue and recovery efforts, including the Truckee Fire Protection District, California State Parks Police, and the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. They emphasised the importance of teamwork in responding to such tragic events.
In a heartfelt message, the department extended its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Garcia-Gutierrez. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent risks associated with water activities, especially when safety precautions, such as wearing flotation devices, are not observed.
As the community reflects on this sorrowful event, it highlights the need for increased awareness regarding safety measures on water. Authorities encourage individuals to ensure they are adequately prepared before engaging in aquatic recreation to prevent further tragedies in the future.
