In an unexpected turn of events over the weekend, television host Kelly Ripa found herself locked out of her running vehicle, along with her beloved dog Lena, her phone, and her keys. The incident unfolded in a casino parking garage, where a helpful stranger played a crucial role in ensuring the pair’s safe return to the car.

Ripa recounted the amusing yet nerve-wracking episode during her talk show, *Live with Kelly and Mark*, earlier this week. Having attended a street festival in Palm Springs with Lena on board, Ripa experienced a moment of confusion after stepping out of the car to retrieve something from the other side. Upon returning, she discovered that the doors were locked and the engine still running—a scenario that sent her into a mild panic.
“The door is locked,” Ripa explained during her show while sharing the story with her co-host and husband, Mark Consuelos. “I put the key in the ignition, turned it on, and put the air conditioning on for Lena, but it’s locked.”
Unfortunately for Ripa, all her essentials—her keys and her mobile phone—had inadvertently been left inside the car. As temperatures in the parking garage began to rise, the urgency of the situation increased.
In search of help, Ripa spotted a man driving a van and managed to flag him down. She candidly introduced the predicament with a light-hearted remark, “I’m so sorry. That is my car. I locked my keys and my human dog and my phone inside the car.” This amusing clarification hinted at her deep affection for her pet, whom she often refers to as her “human dog.”
The stranger, later identified as Leo, suggested that she reach out to AAA for assistance. However, Ripa admitted to being unaware of what AAA stood for, prompting him to facilitate a call to 911. Despite his help, Ripa learned that police could not break into vehicles and were advised to contact a towing service instead. Leo demonstrated remarkable patience throughout the ordeal, even as he expressed the need to return to his wife, who was waiting for him inside the casino.
To ensure Ripa and Lena were safe while they awaited assistance, Leo arranged for the casino security team to stay with them. Although the entire situation lasted only about 20 minutes, Ripa humorously remarked that it felt much longer.
When Ripa finally managed to unlock the car, a comical scenario unfolded. “I sit down in the car, fasten my seatbelt, and Lena’s head pops up,” she said with a chuckle. “She looked at me as if to say, ‘You have no idea what just happened. There were strangers trying to break into this car; I stayed hidden.’”
Mark Consuelos, commenting on Lena’s reaction, joked, “Thank God you had the air conditioning on. That could have been dangerous!” Ripa also shared her concerns, stating, “It was so scary. All I could think was, ‘Forget the dog; Mark is going to kill me.’”
In a revealing moment, Ripa mentioned that upon retrieving her phone, she noticed numerous missed calls from Consuelos, which led her to quip that Lena might have been “telepathically communicating” with him about her predicament.
Ripa and Consuelos, who have been happily married for three decades, are well-known for their love of animals. In February 2025, the couple endured the sorrowful passing of their 17-year-old dog Chewie, a moment Consuelos described as one of the most challenging they faced together as a couple.
Now, with the incident behind her, Ripa is likely to cherish the bond she shares with Lena even more. The escapade served as a reminder of the couple’s devotion to their pets and each other, and it highlighted the unexpected adventures that can arise even during an otherwise normal weekend outing.
*Live with Kelly and Mark* continues to air on weekdays, with viewers eager to tune in for more delightful anecdotes and insightful discussions.
