Cole Sydnor, a resident of Louisville, has reached a significant personal milestone nearly 15 years after he became a quadriplegic due to a spinal cord injury. The 30-year-old content creator, who shares his life with his wife Charisma Jamison, recently documented his journey towards independence through a YouTube video on their channel, “Roll with Cole & Charisma.”

The video, released on May 24, captures a pivotal moment in Sydnor’s life. He explained to their 1.2 million followers how he aimed to get out of bed independently while Jamison was away on what he referred to as a “girl date.” “I want Charisma to have the freedom to go do girl dates and stuff at whatever time of day,” he stated, noting that typically he would wait for her to return, passing the time on his phone.
Sydnor’s life took a drastic turn in August 2011, when he sustained a spinal cord injury from a diving accident as a teenager. This life-changing event rendered him unable to function from the chest down. Despite the challenges posed by his condition, he has consistently worked towards greater autonomy over the years.
In the video titled “5,392 Days Later, A New Independence Milestone,” Sydnor prepared to attempt something he hadn’t done independently since before his injury. He expressed his determination with a candid declaration: “I’m going to try to get out of bed on my own.” His journey towards independence was meticulously set up by Jamison, who ensured he had the necessary tools, including a sliding board and accessible clothing, on hand before she left.
As Sydnor donned his clothes and transitioned from bed to wheelchair, he reflected on his growth in regard to the daily tasks many take for granted. He acknowledged that dressing himself, once a daunting challenge, has become a routine part of his day. “You just kind of get better at being a quadriplegic over time and you find ways to do things,” he shared, emphasising the patience required to navigate his unique circumstances.
Sydnor elaborated on the balance between the difficulty of certain tasks and the desire for independence. “What do you want out of life? Do you want independence? That might mean you’ve got to do some hard things,” he explained. He also highlighted a hopeful sentiment, stating, “the fun part about that is that even when things are hard, they get easier.”
Upon successfully completing his impressive feat of moving independently, Sydnor celebrated the achievement as a testament to what can be accomplished despite daunting odds. “All these little milestones that I’ve hit over the years have just been reminder after reminder that if you want something, don’t just accept life for how it is and be content,” he urged viewers. “Try to do it.”
Cole and Charisma’s journey together began in December 2017 when they met at the Sheltering Arms Institute rehabilitation facility, where Jamison was an inpatient therapist. Sydnor was utilising the facility as a gym, working with trained staff who specialised in caring for individuals with similar challenges.
Their relationship blossomed, and four months after they began dating, they started to document their lives together online to keep their loved ones informed. Ultimately, they became engaged in July 2019 and married the following November, creating a supportive partnership that continues to inspire many.
Sydnor’s latest video is just one of many that showcase his journey towards greater independence and the role of his devoted wife. Together, they have become a source of inspiration for countless individuals facing their own challenges. Their story emphasises the importance of perseverance, personal growth, and the belief that obstacles can be overcome with determination and patience.
