Acclaimed actresses Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, and Naomi Ackie recently shared their experiences while working on Boots Riley’s latest project, *I Love Boosters*. This film, which is now showing in cinemas, is not just another title in the realm of indie cinema; it represents a heartfelt dedication and the challenges faced by its cast.

The trio of performers portrays a group of shoplifters navigating the world of high fashion. Discussing their roles, they conveyed the intense commitment and effort they put into the film. Palmer, 32, fondly recalls the demanding schedule, saying, “We put in a couple of 18-hour days,” reflecting on the rigorous filming conditions in Riley’s home ground of the Bay Area and in Atlanta.
“I swear I slept like four hours, on the floor,” Paige, 35, added, recounting her own experiences of slipping in and out of consciousness amidst the filming frenzy. The filmmaking process was described as being incredibly intense, with the actors often catching snippets of rest between takes. “When we were in between stuff, we would either be together talking or try to get a moment to sleep or nap,” Palmer explained.
The filmmakers faced numerous challenges typical of independent productions. Ackie pointed out that the film’s dedication to a unique vision—examining themes like capitalism, labour, and the power of solidarity—required both a raw and spirited approach. “It was exhausting,” Paige stated. Yet, in the throes of this hard work, the set was also filled with camaraderie and laughter. “It sparked lots of thinking and deep talks,” she noted, adding that their discussions ranged from serious to “gossipy.”
Paige’s pregnancy during filming added another layer to her experience, injecting her scenes with an element of joyous humour. “I peed on myself a couple of times because I was pregnant and laughing,” she recalled, happily hinting that her co-stars contributed to her baby’s good mood even before his birth. “I swear it’s because of you girls. It was so much love and joy on set,” she remarked affectionately.
Riley’s distinct approach to directing infused the filming environment with his unique quirks. Ackie relayed a whimsical detail about the set, mentioning that Riley had left “little rubber unicorns” scattered around. “I stole one,” she admitted with a smile, showcasing an insight into the playful atmosphere that characterised the production.
Despite its comedic veneer, *I Love Boosters* challenges its audience with complex ideas and narratives that might not easily fit within the confines of traditional Hollywood storytelling. Paige emphasised the film’s ambition, wishing for audiences to engage with the themes presented. “We have to bring back critical thinking and the ability to hold multiple truths and the ability to agree to disagree, but with all due respect,” she suggested.
The film, featuring a diverse cast that includes notable names such as LaKeith Stanfield, Poppy Liu, Eiza González, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, and Demi Moore, is now available in theatres as of May 22. Its adventurous spirit reflects the heart of independent cinema, offering a refreshing narrative that stands in contrast to conventional fare.
In an industry often dominated by big studios and predictable plots, *I Love Boosters* emerges as a bold statement piece. The laughter, discussions, and challenges faced by Palmer, Paige, and Ackie encapsulate the essence of what it means to create independent art. Through their hard work, they hope to not only entertain but stimulate conversations that linger long after the credits roll.
