A young bride-to-be from Nebraska has garnered overwhelming support from her local community following the destructive path of an EF3 tornado that obliterated her new home on May 17. Graci Boersen, 20, and her mother, Christina Parden, were sheltering in their basement when the storm struck, forcing them to confront a life-altering disaster just weeks before her wedding.

The pair had only recently moved into the property near St. Libory at the beginning of May, having poured their dreams into crafting the perfect home. Boersen recalled the excitement surrounding their new venture, saying, “She’s been dreaming of this house since as long as I can remember.” With just weeks to go before her nuptials to fiancé Micah Rhoades, Boersen had been finalising wedding details, eager to prepare for her upcoming celebration.

As threatening clouds loomed, the mother and daughter duo had just returned from a grocery trip when the storm intensified. “I’ve never liked storms; I’ve always been terrified,” Boersen confessed, admitting her fears as the darkness crept in. While she attempted to shower, Christina burst into the bathroom, alerting her to the funnel cloud looming dangerously close. What followed was a harrowing experience as they rushed to gather their pets and take cover in the basement.
With the sounds of the tornado growing louder and more menacing, Graci recalled the feeling of their home shaking and crumbling around them. “I could just hear the whole house rip off the foundation… the feeling is indescribable,” she said, reflecting on the terrifying moment. The tornado, clocking speeds of up to 160 mph, struck swiftly, reducing their home to ruins within mere minutes.
Once the terrifying storm subsided, the pair emerged from their hiding place only to be confronted with the devastating reality that their home was entirely destroyed. “It was so scary,” Graci lamented. The whirlwind had claimed almost all of their belongings, including wedding decorations and gifts, just weeks before the celebration.
In the wake of the disaster, a relative of Parden set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the devastated family. “They lost their home and everything inside of it,” the campaign’s creator shared. The outpouring of support has been remarkable, with nearly £10,000 raised to assist Boersen and her mother in coping with their significant loss.
Numerous local and even distant brides have reached out to Graci, offering wedding supplies and decorations from their own recent celebrations. “People have been amazing,” Boersen expressed, highlighting the solidarity displayed by her community. Wedding vendors have also stepped forward, offering to provide essential items for her ceremony at no cost, demonstrating a heartfelt willingness to help.
One bakery in Grand Island, where Graci works, hosted a fundraising event that raised nearly £9,000. “There’s no other word to describe it besides just beautiful,” she said, overwhelmed by the generosity she’s encountered. The community’s kindness has profoundly impacted Graci, reshaping what her wedding will represent.
Fortunately, not everything was lost in the tornado. Boersen’s wedding dress survived the chaos, having been sent for alterations just a week prior to the disaster. In a stroke of luck, Parden’s mother-of-the-bride dress was later discovered in a nearby cornfield and returned to her after cleaning.
While Graci acknowledges her wedding plans may require adjustments, her experience has imbued the occasion with fresh significance. “I do feel like the wedding is going to be just that much more special for us,” she reflected, understanding now the true value of community support in times of need. “I know I’ll probably be unable to get through the day without crying,” she added, mindful of the difficult journey leading up to their special day.
A friend of hers captured the sentiment perfectly, saying, “the community is now a part of your wedding.” As Graci and Christina begin the process of rebuilding their lives, they are met with the compassion and generosity of those around them, reaffirming the power of community in the face of adversity.
