Legendary musician Phil Collins, famed for his drumming and storytelling prowess, has provided a hopeful update regarding his health and the future of his music career. In a recent interview with the BBC, Collins, 75, expressed a notable improvement in his well-being after grappling with various health complications over recent years.

Reflecting on the past 18 months, he stated, “Everything health-wise caught up with me at the same time, and whatever could go wrong did go wrong. But everything’s fine now.” Collins has endured significant struggles, particularly with his knee, which necessitated multiple surgeries. Despite enduring pain and limitations, he continued to tour until eventually he required extensive medical intervention. “I had to have a knee operation five times because it kept getting infected or breaking,” he recounted, highlighting the challenges that led to an extended period of inactivity.

Collins is slated to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist this November. Although he is experiencing a resurgence in health, he has opted not to perform at the ceremony. “I can’t really see it happening,” he noted, emphasising his current health status. He elaborated on the complexities associated with live performances, stating, “You can’t just go on stage. You have to rehearse. If you’ve not been singing, your voice is going to be shot.”
This year will mark the second time Collins will receive this prestigious honour; he was inducted with Genesis in 2010. Despite his current reluctance to perform live, Collins remained optimistic about the possibility of returning to music in the future, expressing he would “contemplate” making a comeback. “I’m constantly saying to myself, ‘I gotta go back down to my studio at home,’” he shared, revealing that he has been amassing ideas for lyrics and has several unfinished projects he’d like to pursue.
Collins last released an album featuring original material in 2002 with “Testify.” In 2022, he officially retired from drumming due to ongoing health problems, including back and knee surgeries that have made it increasingly difficult for him to engage fully with his craft. His struggles have taken a toll not only on his physical abilities but also on his emotional well-being, having shared in earlier interviews that he has dealt with ongoing medical challenges, including COVID-19 and difficulties with his kidneys.
In January, during a candid discussion with the BBC, Collins elaborated on the extent of his health issues, describing them as an “ongoing thing.” He mentioned relying on a 24-hour live-in nurse, indicative of the serious nature of his health struggles. “I can walk, albeit with assistance,” he explained while reflecting on his extensive career that began with him playing the drums at the tender age of five.
Earlier this month, Collins made a rare public appearance at The King’s Trust 50th Anniversary Party at Buckingham Palace, alongside his ex-wife, Jill Collins. The event was notable not only for its celebration of the charity’s work but also for the presence of stars such as Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster. Jill shared on social media that despite the pouring rain, the celebration was filled with joy and highlighted moments spent with King Charles, who appeared genuinely pleased to see Collins, acknowledging their long-standing relationship.
As Collins continues to navigate his health journey, his steadfast connection to music remains evident. He possesses a wealth of creative ideas waiting to be realised, and fans can only hope that his improved health will inspire a return to the stage or studio in the future. The enduring legacy of Phil Collins, both as a drummer and a songwriter, hints at the possibility of more music from this iconic artist ahead.
