A fifteen-year-old girl from Essex, Lexi Brown, has faced a life-altering challenge after suffering a rare spinal stroke that left her paralysed from the neck down. The medical emergency unfolded in December 2025 while Lexi was recuperating at home from flu-like symptoms. Her mother, Stacy Grantham, recounted the incident, describing how Lexi had called her in agony, a call that confirmed her worst fears.

Stacy, 33, rushed home only to find paramedics already on the scene administering CPR. Lexi was swiftly transported to the hospital where doctors placed her in a medically-induced coma as they worked to understand the severity of her condition. After five harrowing days, Lexi awoke to the heartbreaking news that she was paralysed from the neck down.

The diagnosis revealed that Lexi had suffered a spinal stroke, a rare occurrence typically associated with disrupted blood flow to the spinal cord. Unlike more familiar strokes that affect brain function, spinal strokes can lead to immediate and severe pain, numbness, and paralysis in the body. Lexi’s case took everyone by surprise, particularly her family, as the notion of such an event happening to a healthy 14-year-old girl seemed unfathomable. “You picture a stroke as an older person; you don’t think it can happen to a healthy 14-year-old,” Stacy reflected.
Amid the devastation of her condition, Lexi has shown resilience. With relentless physiotherapy, she has started to regain some movement in her limbs. However, her ability to speak has been significantly compromised; she now communicates through a tracheostomy tube. Stacy mentioned how Lexi’s passion for singing has suffered a tremendous blow, leaving her frustrated. “She was an avid singer and her voice has been taken away — that’s been devastating for her,” Stacy stated.
Lexi’s life used to be filled with musical theatre and dancing, but now, she must adapt to a new reality filled with challenges. “She lost everything she loves,” her mother lamented, while also stressing the family’s commitment to staying positive throughout this ordeal.
To further complicate the circumstances, Stacy has applied for special council housing to better accommodate Lexi’s medical needs once she is eventually discharged from the hospital. Their current rental home poses significant accessibility issues that make day-to-day life increasingly difficult for Lexi as her recovery progresses.
In light of their struggles, a family friend, Nicola Tayler, has set up a JustGiving fundraiser to assist Lexi and her mother through this trying time. Nicola highlighted the potential financial strain on the family, as Stacy may need to leave her job to provide full-time care for her daughter. In her message on the fundraising page, she appealed for community support, emphasising that any contribution, regardless of size, would make a significant impact on Lexi’s recovery.
As Lexi navigates the complexities of her rehabilitation, the community around her is rallying together, hoping to ease her family’s burdens and help Lexi pursue the recovery she deserves.
