Craig Robinson, the well-known actor and comedian, recently reminisced about his time on the iconic show *Friends*, where he shared a scene with Lisa Kudrow. That experience, he says, was pivotal in his journey through the entertainment industry. In an interview with *Entertainment Weekly* on 25 May, he discussed the significance of Kudrow’s support during his guest appearance in the series’ final season.
Robinson’s career began to take shape in the early 2000s, during which time he was primarily working as a stand-up comedian. Before landing his role in *Friends*, he had made guest appearances on shows such as *LAX* and *The Bernie Mac Show*, and he starred in the FX series *Lucky*. However, the audition for *Friends* marked a turning point. He recalled feeling slightly out of place when he walked into the audition room, surrounded by a group of “14 white guys dressed like limo drivers”. “I thought I had arrived too early,” he said, but soon realised he was right on time and successfully secured the role.

Robinson’s episode, titled “The One with Princess Consuela,” aired in the tenth and last season of *Friends* and featured a subplot involving Kudrow’s character, Phoebe Buffay, as she sought to change her name following her marriage to Paul Rudd’s character, Mike Hannigan. During the episode, Phoebe converses with Robinson’s character, a government worker who inadvertently inspires her comedic name change to “Princess Consuela Bananahammock”.
Although his role was small and limited to a single scene, Robinson appreciated Kudrow’s willingness to champion his contributions. “We rehearsed it twice, and then they had a pitch,” he explained. He recalled a moment during the rehearsal when he improvised a line, which Kudrow heard. “She was like, ‘We have a pitch!’” he said, which allowed him to further engage in the scene. Robinson expressed his gratitude for her support, stating, “That was because of her. I was just in there like, ‘I’m a freaking friend! What are you talking about?'”

In that memorable scene, Phoebe first makes a rather inappropriate statement to Robinson’s character when she observes, “This place is so depressing. If I worked here I’d kill myself,” showcasing the signature humour of *Friends*. Their interaction is a blend of comedy and character development, with Robinson’s character telling her bluntly to “Get out of my line”.
Following his guest role on *Friends*, Robinson continued to carve out a name for himself in the industry, appearing in shows such as *Arrested Development* and *Curb Your Enthusiasm*. However, it was his role as Darryl Philbin, the foreman of the warehouse in *The Office*, that truly catapulted him to fame. His performance earned him two Screen Actors Guild Awards as part of the show’s ensemble cast, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in television comedy.
Robinson’s impressive filmography also includes notable movies like *Pineapple Express*, *Hot Tub Time Machine*, and *This Is the End*. More recently, he has made strides in theatre, making his Broadway debut in December 2025 for the production titled *All Out: Comedy About Ambition*. His upcoming project includes a character named Atlas, a talking hippo with GPS, in the much-anticipated *Toy Story 5*.
Reflecting on his comedic journey, Robinson shared insights into how he came to embrace his career in comedy. In a 2021 conversation with *PEOPLE*, he stated, “Comedy chose me.” He detailed how he simply couldn’t stop being funny, whether it was to friends or even strangers. As a testament to his determination, he wrote himself a note proclaiming, “You are going to be a great comedian,” later crossing it out to read “You are a great comedian.” This statement encapsulated his commitment to pursuing his passion, despite being unsure of the exact path to take.
As Robinson continues to grow within the industry, his experiences from shows like *Friends* and the support he received from established stars like Lisa Kudrow remain etched in his memory. The journey from a stand-up comedian to a beloved figure in film and television highlights the resilience and talent that Robinson possesses in the ever-changing landscape of Hollywood.
