On the sixth anniversary of George Floyd’s tragic death, his family remains resolute in their commitment to honour his legacy and continue advocating for much-needed reforms in law enforcement. Bianca Williams, Floyd’s 32-year-old niece, recently stated, “With all the different changes in politics, we really want to show the world what standing together looks like.” This sentiment encapsulates the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in the wake of his murder by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020.

Reflecting on the man behind the headline, Bianca poignantly remarked, “My uncle was more than a headline. He was family, he was deeply loved. His life mattered long before the world knew his name.” Such statements serve as a reminder that George Floyd’s identity extends far beyond the pivotal moment captured on video that sparked a global movement against racism and police brutality.
LaTonya Floyd, George’s elder sister, has faced her own challenges this past year but remains unwavering in her determination to honour her brother’s memory. After suffering two strokes and a brain aneurysm, LaTonya told reporters, “They said his movement was bigger than Martin Luther King, and that shook my nerves.” Despite her health struggles, she leads the charge alongside family members to maintain the momentum of George Floyd’s legacy.
The family’s ongoing activism focuses significantly on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a proposed federal bill aimed at banning chokeholds and limiting no-knock warrants in federal cases while advocating for similar reforms on a national scale. Bianca expressed her frustration, stating, “It’s been six years and we’re still pushing to get the bill passed—his life and his legacy should never be forgotten.”
George Floyd’s death shone a spotlight on the harsh realities of racism and police brutality. Bianca, who currently resides in Houston and serves in a government position in Texas, believes that without the video evidence of her uncle’s final moments, the world may not have fully grasped the severity of such issues. “He brought a lot of people together,” she noted, highlighting the unifying effect his story has had on countless individuals fighting for justice.
In commemoration of Floyd’s life, the family is set to host their second annual “Conversation with George” event on Memorial Day, situated in Tom Bass Regional Park. This community gathering aims to honour Floyd through shared memories, food, and music, embodying the themes of love and unity. Bianca elaborated on the event’s mission, stating, “We’ll talk about the memories we shared with him, and what love and unity look like, to be able to come together and give back to the community.”
In addition to the Memorial Day event, LaTonya and other family members have planned a community outreach initiative where they will prepare and distribute meals to survivors of domestic violence at a local shelter. LaTonya emphasised, “That’s what George would want—people helping people.” This drive to give back reflects the core values that George Floyd instilled in his family and the world around him.
While supporting her sister during hard times, Bianca has also taken significant personal strides toward social justice. Following a traumatic incident where her daughter survived a gunshot wound while asleep at home, she founded the non-profit organisation Ari Strong, which assists victims of gun violence. Bianca’s transformation from personal tragedy to action exemplifies the resilience of the Floyd family.
As the family rallies together in the pursuit of justice, Bianca encapsulated their strength by stating, “We stick together. Family’s all you have.” The commitment to solidarity and continued activism not only honours George Floyd’s memory but also embodies the principles needed to advocate for systemic change.
As discussions around systemic racism continue to unfold, there are numerous organisations dedicated to eradicating police brutality and addressing racial disparities. Notable initiatives include Campaign Zero, which utilises data-driven strategies to end police violence, and Color of Change, which strives to ensure government accountability regarding racial inequalities. Additional support for young Black individuals can be found via the National Cares Mentoring Movement, dedicated to providing essential social and academic guidance.
The legacy of George Floyd lives on through the continued efforts of his family and a community united against racial injustice. Their journey serves as a powerful reminder of the relevance of compassion, solidarity, and the pressing need for systemic reform in today’s society.
