Elvia Vargas has emerged as a beacon of resilience after recently graduating from Rutgers School of Nursing while simultaneously navigating the challenges of motherhood. Her story is an inspiring testament to perseverance, particularly as she continued her education shortly after the birth of her twins.

Vargas, who received the news of her pregnancy during the final stages of her nursing degree last summer, faced a multitude of responsibilities as she prepared for both motherhood and graduation. The birth of her daughters, Victoria and Valentina, on February 12 marked a significant milestone, and just weeks later, she was back to her studies after recovering from a C-section.

At nearly 40 years old, Vargas expressed immense pride in achieving her nursing degree, stating that it embodies the strength, patience, and determination she has cultivated throughout her life. “El que persevera, alcanza,” she remarked, translating to “those who persevere, succeed,” highlighting her belief that hard work ultimately pays off.
Her instructor, Vanessa Lugo, praised Vargas’s dedication, particularly in light of the physical challenges she faced during her studies. Lugo noted, “What impressed me most was her thoughtful decision to continue. No matter what was happening, she showed up focused and ready to care for her patients. That consistency makes a strong nurse.”
Vargas’s journey began at the age of 20 when she moved to Berlin, New Jersey, to work as an au pair. There, she learned English from her host mother, an experience she recalls as formative. Following this, she became a single mother to her son, Amir, and later established a cleaning business to support her family. In addition, Vargas provided comfort to the elderly, motivated by a deep sense of compassion. “I wanted to care for them the way I would want someone to care for my parents, who are aging in Colombia,” she explained.
In 2019, Vargas’s educational aspirations took a major step forward when she enrolled at Camden County College. It was during this time that she met Luis Martinez, who would become her partner. Originally from Puerto Rico, Martinez also made the transition into healthcare from a custodial position in a surgical centre, encouraged by a physician to pursue nursing.
The couple expanded their family with the arrival of their daughter, Amaia, which led them both to enrol in the nursing programme at Rutgers. To accommodate their growing family, Martinez commenced his studies first to sort out their schedules effectively, allowing Vargas to join the programme the following year. Martinez graduated in the previous year and currently works in the gastroenterology ICU at Cooper University Health Care.
“The programme prepared us well,” Martinez stated. “The clinical experience makes you feel like a nurse. You’ve already seen a lot before you even start the job.” Vargas agreed that her experiences have enhanced her ability to connect with patients on a deeper level. “When patients talk to you, they can sense if you understand what they’re going through,” she noted, asserting her dedication to the nursing profession.
She is now eyeing the NCLEX exam to become a registered nurse, yet she is wisely pausing her hospital work until her newborn twins reach their first birthday. Vargas emphasised that despite the challenges, her belief in her capabilities has been a driving force. “Even when it was hard, I kept going,” she reiterated.
Martinez played a crucial role during this period, taking paternity leave to support Vargas and manage their children, allowing her to concentrate on completing her degree. Reflecting on Vargas’s ability to juggle her studies, twin pregnancy, and family life, he remarked, “Everything she handled at once – school, pregnancy, the kids — it’s a lot. And she did it.”
Elvia Vargas’s remarkable journey stands as a poignant example of determination and dedication in pursuit of education and family, proving that with perseverance, one can navigate even the most formidable challenges.
