A London man, Guy Evans, has shared his harrowing experience of breaking his neck while performing yard work at his family’s holiday home in France. The 30-year-old sustained life-altering injuries after a fall from a tree, prompting urgent medical intervention that he described as a result of what he now views as his “foolish” oversight regarding travel insurance.

In April, Guy was visiting his father when the accident occurred. He and his brother, Robbie Evans, were engaged in some gardening activities around the property. Guy recalled feeling irritated by some broken branches on a tree situated at the front of the house. In an attempt to clear the debris, he climbed a ladder and successfully removed two branches. However, while trying to reach for a third branch, things took a drastic turn.
“The branch snapped, and I fell on a stone wall, which was where the damage was really done,” Guy explained. The fall resulted in catastrophic injuries to his neck. He stated, “I obliterated my C6 vertebrae,” referring to one of the vertebrae situated at the top of the spinal column. Despite the severity of his injuries, he expressed gratitude that his spinal cord remained intact.
Following the accident, medical professionals carried out a two-part surgery to reconstruct his vertebra. Initially treated in France, Guy was later transferred to a medical facility back in London to further his recovery. Although he is currently unable to walk, there is a small silver lining; he has managed to regain movement in his arms and hands.
Reflecting on the situation, Guy labelled himself a “foolish, foolish boy” for not securing travel insurance before embarking on his trip. “You always think that these things won’t happen to you,” he conceded, revealing that the absence of insurance has left him facing substantial, accumulating medical expenses.
As he navigates this challenging recovery, the financial strain has become a pressing concern. Medical bills from his treatment in France, coupled with the costs associated with his repatriation back to the UK, have left Guy and his family in a difficult position. To alleviate some financial burden, his brother has set up a GoFundMe page.
“We don’t know exactly how much it is going to cost, but the repatriation back to the UK — that’s a big expense,” Guy said, expressing concern for the mountain of debt they could face. Any funds raised through the campaign will assist in covering medical costs and ensuring he receives the best possible care during his rehabilitation, which is expected to take about 18 months.
Robbie Evans, in a heartfelt appeal on the fundraising platform, shared the emotional toll the past few weeks have taken on their family. “As you can imagine, this has been the hardest few weeks of our lives,” he wrote. “The strength and courage that Guy has shown in the face of unimaginable adversity has been nothing short of inspirational.” He further asserted that with support from the community, Guy would have a favourable chance of overcoming this ordeal.
Despite the trials ahead, Guy Evans is determined to remain positive throughout his recovery journey. His unwavering spirit serves as a reminder to others about the unforeseen risks of outdoor activities and the importance of preparing for potential accidents, particularly when travelling abroad. The encouragement from friends and family, coupled with the kindness of strangers contributing to his fundraising efforts, is providing him with the motivation he needs to face the challenges ahead.
