In her post, shared on Saturday, May 23, Meghan recounted the joy that Douglas brought to her life. Alongside a photograph of him with their father, she wrote, “He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humour, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together.” She extended her prayers to Douglas’ wife, Ashley, and their two children, Caroline and Douglas Shepp McCain Jr. Details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed publicly.

Douglas McCain was born in Pensacola, Florida, and spent his childhood in Jacksonville. He attended Jacksonville Episcopal High School and went on to graduate from the University of Virginia in 1982, where he studied Systems Engineering. It was during his time at university that he met his future wife, Ashley.
Following his education, Douglas served in the United States Navy, a career that aligned with the family’s military background. He later became a captain for American Airlines and contributed to his father’s political campaigns, a role he undertook with dedication while managing his responsibilities as a father. His commitment to family and duty remained a significant aspect of his life.
Douglas was recognised for his reserved presence, often staying out of the public eye compared to some of his siblings. However, his connection with his family remained strong. Reflecting on his relationship with his younger siblings in a 2017 interview, he stated, “We’re not extraordinarily close, but if I ever need something, I know how to reach them.”
His childhood was filled with experiences typical of a military family, as he recalled having fun with numerous children on Navy bases. The family dynamics changed over the years, especially following the divorce of John and Carol McCain, Douglas’ mother. John McCain later married Cindy McCain, adding to the family with four more children: Meghan, John “Jack,” James, and Bridget.
As many mourn the loss of Douglas, the family has organised a memorial gathering at the Princess Anne Country Club on Saturday, May 30. In memory of Douglas, attendees are encouraged to donate to local educational institutions or charities of their choice rather than sending flowers.
The obituary highlighted Douglas’ generous heart, his loyal friendships, and his deep love for family. He is survived by his wife Ashley, their daughter Caroline, son Douglas Shepp McCain Jr., and grandson Teddy—each of whom will remember him for his kindness and dedicated spirit.
Douglas McCain’s unexpected passing has left a significant void, not only within his immediate family but also among friends and members of the community who appreciated his quiet strength and steadfast support. As tributes continue to pour in, it is clear that he will be profoundly missed.
