In the face of soaring rental prices in the Hamptons, Taylor Jayne and Wyatt Buffington made a life-changing decision in 2025. Tired of spending over £1,800 a month on a one-bedroom apartment above a garage in Southampton, the engaged couple set their sights on homeownership. Their search for an affordable and private space led them to an unexpected find: a 1968 trailer located in Suffolk Pines Mobile Home Park, Westhampton Beach.

Jayne, originally from Hampton Bays, had long dreamed of owning a home in the area she loved, while Buffington, a Californian, was also drawn to the vibrant community. Upon discovering the two-bedroom trailer listed at £150,000—nearly £40,000 below its asking price—the couple saw potential where others might have seen only age. “Wyatt was instantly down for the idea,” Jayne told reporters, her fiancé’s enthusiasm confirming for her that he was the right partner for this venture.

Owning a home promised financial benefits along with the creative freedom they craved. “We wanted to keep costs low to enjoy travelling, including winter trips to California to visit Wyatt’s family,” Jayne explained. This flexibility would require compromise, but the couple was open to sacrifice for the greater good of their future.
Jayne’s mother was initially sceptical of her daughter’s unconventional choice, but after an inspiring discussion—and some strategic photoshopping—she too began to see the trailer’s potential. With Buffington’s construction background in tow, the couple set about transforming their new home while juggling full-time jobs.
Thus far, they have invested approximately £8,000 into renovations. Their updates include installing new windows, flooring, and lighting fixtures, as well as adding custom bamboo blinds and fencing around their yard for their puppy, Ozzy. A further budget of £8,000 has been earmarked for future projects in the kitchen and bathroom. However, the biggest hurdle they faced wasn’t merely financial; managing their time effectively proved to be equally crucial. “We both work full-time,” Jayne noted, “so we’re being intentional about pacing ourselves to ensure we still enjoy our lives while working.”
The couple found numerous unexpected perks in their trailer. The previous owner had meticulously maintained the property, allowing it to retain its charm despite its age. Yet, Jayne acknowledged that they faced unique challenges renovating a mobile home. “The structure has fewer studs, and the windows and doors are smaller, so we have to work around those unique limitations,” she explained. But with determination, they adapt and learn as they progress.
Living in the trailer offers a sense of privacy that they missed in their previous rental, allowing them an escape from shared walls or noisy neighbours. “Having a yard for our puppy has been a wonderful addition. It means we can enjoy outdoor space without the constant interference of nearby dwellings,” she said, relishing the newfound sense of community within the small park that houses about 60 units.
As the cost of living continues to challenge many young residents in Long Island, Jayne noted a growing trend: more couples are considering mobile home communities as viable options for affordable housing. Since their move, they have welcomed several new neighbours who, like them, are looking to create affordable living spaces through renovation. “One of my best friends moved in just last month,” Jayne revealed, highlighting the strong connections forming within their community.
With renovations nearly complete, Jayne and Buffington are finally in a position to embrace the lifestyle they envisioned for themselves. Excited about the upcoming summer, Jayne shared plans to buy bicycles and equip them with surfboard racks for beach trips, all while ensuring Ozzy can join them in a wagon.
Looking back on their journey, Jayne expressed no regrets about choosing a non-traditional home. Instead, she advocates for others to take similar risks in pursuit of homeownership. “Every ounce of sweat equity we’ve put into this trailer enhances its value while allowing us to live in a place we love affordably,” she concluded with a smile, clearly relishing the success of their joint effort. Their adventure stands as a testament to the possibilities of creativity, community, and determination, inspiring those who feel stagnant in their renting situations to consider alternative paths to homeownership.
