A fitness influencer has recently opened up about her experience with labiaplasty, shedding light on a topic that many women grapple with in silence. Niki Zoumpouli, who documented her journey on social media, underwent the procedure following complications from childbirth, specifically an improperly stitched tear. Her aim is to raise awareness and encourage other women to ask more questions about their options during pregnancy and childbirth.

On 19th March, Zoumpouli took to Instagram to share the details of her surgery, which she described as a corrective measure to address a tear that was not adequately repaired during her delivery. In her candid post, she offered important advice to expectant mothers, urging them to be proactive and informed. “If you’re pregnant or planning to be, ASK QUESTIONS before you’re in that moment,” she emphasised. “Once it happens, you’re trusting someone else to make those decisions for your body.”

Zoumpouli highlighted the lack of guidance many women receive regarding healing after childbirth. “Most of the time, you’re sent home, cleared at your postpartum visit, and that’s it,” she explained. “There’s no real guidance on what healing should actually feel like.” This lack of information can lead women to dismiss discomfort or pain as just part of motherhood, which is not always the case. Her experience exemplifies the need for better communication around postnatal care.
In her personal journey, Zoumpouli sought to undergo labiaplasty as a means of reclaiming her body after the drastic changes brought on by childbirth. She referred to it as a way to rebuild “the woman who gave everything” to bring her child into the world. By sharing her story, she aims to normalise discussions surrounding such procedures and alleviate feelings of isolation among those who may face similar issues.
Describing the surgery as “quick and easy,” Zoumpouli mentioned that the only discomfort during the operation stemmed from the local anaesthesia. However, once she returned home, she encountered unexpected pain as the anaesthetic wore off. “First hours home: felt like superwoman…until the anaesthesia wore off,” she shared, recalling a spike in pain that reached an 8 out of 10. She advised others to proactively manage pain with the prescribed medication to avoid severe discomfort.
Zoumpouli also highlighted the importance of support during recovery. She was grateful to her brother, who moved in to help her during this time. Sharing a photograph of him bringing her coffee and meals, she acknowledged that she spent most of her first few days post-surgery in bed. “I was mostly in bed,” she noted, recognising the need for assistance following the procedure.
Although she initially faced challenges with bloating and discomfort, Zoumpouli reported feeling significantly better just two days after the surgery. She expressed relief that the overall experience was “easier” than she anticipated. Her insight serves as a reminder that while recovery may present obstacles, it’s often manageable with the right support and care.
In concluding her post, Zoumpouli extended a message of solidarity to other women who might be struggling with similar issues. “I know so many women deal with this quietly. You’re not alone,” she reaffirmed, aiming to create a sense of community and understanding around this often-taboo subject.
Zoumpouli’s openness about her experience sheds light on a crucial aspect of women’s health that deserves greater attention and discussion. By sharing her story, she hopes to empower other women to seek the care and information they need, ultimately helping to foster a more supportive environment for those navigating the complexities of motherhood and recovery.
