A significant recall has been announced for a number of squishy toys sold at Walmart and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet across the United States. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) confirmed that these products may contain a potentially hazardous substance: fibrous tremolite, a form of asbestos. This recall affects approximately 121,340 units of Orb Funkee Squeeze Toys that were available for purchase between February 2025 and April 2026.

The toys in question, produced by Orb Toys, include two specific models of “monkee” squishies. According to officials, inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to severe respiratory problems, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Though no incidents related to these toys have been reported thus far, the health risks associated with asbestos exposure warrant immediate attention.
The models being recalled feature a soft, stretchable exterior and are filled with sand, which is where the asbestos contamination has been identified. The first variant is known as the large golden “Monkee,” labelled under the code 17451. The second model comprises an assortment of smaller colourful “monkees,” which can be identified by the code 41929. Consumers are advised to check the date codes, which can be found on the hand of the golden Monkee or on the back of the assorted variants.

In response to the recall, a spokesperson for Walmart stated, “We take quality and safety standards seriously for all our suppliers and sellers. We have removed this third-party item from our site. Purchasers of the product are advised to discontinue use.” Customers are encouraged to stop using these toys immediately and to dispose of them safely.
For disposal, parents are instructed to place the recalled toys in a heavy-duty plastic bag and seal it securely with tape. In the event that the toys are torn and the contents are exposed, adults should wear gloves and a mask while handling the items to minimise risk. To contain any sand that may have spilled out, it is advisable to use damp cloths for clean-up.

Individuals seeking a refund for the recalled products are advised to verify the code and lot number prior to disposal. They should also photograph the products inside the sealed bag as part of the refund process. Customers can receive a refund by providing proof of purchase from the affected batch.
The recall serves as a crucial reminder of ongoing vigilance regarding toy safety standards, as even widely available products can sometimes pose unforeseen health risks. This incident underscores the need for consumers to remain informed and take immediate action when such recalls are announced. As the situation develops, further guidance may become available through official channels, including the CPSC and participating retailers.
While the timeframe for the recall spans over a year, it is essential for consumers who may have purchased these toys to check their homes for any of the affected items and follow the recommended safety protocols. The health implications associated with asbestos should not be underestimated, and all necessary precautions should be taken to ensure the safety of children and families.
