A tragic incident occurred in Biscayne Park, Florida, where Eric Alan Hirt, a renowned graffiti artist, lost his life after being struck by a Brightline train on May 13. The 47-year-old artist was fatally hit at approximately 12:26 am while walking on the tracks, prompting an outpouring of grief and calls for better safety measures from his family and the community.

Hirt’s widow, Shawn Hirt, expressed her devastation over the loss and questioned the lack of safety features surrounding the train tracks. The couple had lived in their home near the tracks for over three decades and were familiar with the area. According to Shawn, Eric, who was partially deaf, frequently crossed the tracks behind their residence. She recounted that the tracks are situated in a ‘quiet zone,’ meaning no train horns sound in that area, often making it harder for pedestrians to be aware of approaching trains.

The Brightline train service, operational since 2017, is known for its high-speed travel, reaching speeds of up to 125 miles per hour. Since its inception, the service has been associated with more than 200 fatalities on or near the tracks, with Hirt’s passing marking the 206th fatality according to a joint investigation by WLRN and The Miami Herald.
In response to the tragedy, Shawn Hirt created a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the expenses faced by their family, particularly for their daughters affected by the loss. She highlighted the urgent need for enhanced safety features in the vicinity of the tracks, questioning how many more lives must be lost before significant changes are made. “How many people have to die?” she echoed in her plea, reflecting the frustration felt by many within the community.
Brightline issued a statement following the incident, asserting their commitment to safety and noting that the responsibility for the accidents has not rested with their personnel or equipment. Their spokesperson reiterated that Brightline has taken extensive measures related to safety initiatives, claiming that their focus on these areas has led to no accidents being attributed to improper train handling. Their statement further called for community cooperation in ensuring safety around the tracks.
Shawn Hirt further elaborated on the tragic circumstances of Eric’s death, informing that the authorities reviewed footage of the incident and observed that Eric had only looked up just moments before being struck. She insisted that the incident was purely accidental and emphasised the importance of understanding the railway environment to prevent further tragedies.
The May 13 incident is particularly poignant as it represents the ninth Brightline-related fatality in 2026. Despite being a slight reduction from previous years, the statistics surrounding train-related accidents remain alarming when compared to other rail networks. Data indicates that fatalities associated with Brightline trains tend to average one every thirteen days, a much higher frequency than that of the New York’s Long Island Rail Road.
Critics of Brightline have pointed out the company’s safety track record, especially given that many fatalities have involved pedestrians. In previous reports, it was suggested that a significant portion of deaths were linked to suicides, illustrating the multifaceted challenges surrounding train safety. Moreover, many of the train tracks are at street level, cutting through busy intersections, which further complicates safety measures.
In light of these ongoing concerns, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has pushed for federal funding aimed at bolstering railway safety efforts. Approximately $42 million has been allocated for projects intended to enhance safety features such as fencing and interventions designed to discourage individuals from bypassing lowered crossing gates.
As discussions on potential improvements to safety continue, the tragic loss of Eric Hirt serves as a stark reminder of the need for comprehensive changes within the railway system. With community members and family advocating for enhanced safety measures, there is a collective hope that Eric’s death will not be in vain and that future preventable tragedies can be addressed effectively.
