In an insightful interview with *Woman’s World*, actress Kathy Garver, now 80 years old, shared a nostalgic account of the tumultuous audition process that ultimately secured her the role of Cissy Davis in the beloved sitcom *Family Affair*. The show premiered in 1966 and ran for five seasons, cementing Garver’s place in television history.

Garver, who was in her late teens at the time, recounted a particular moment that almost derailed her audition. At the time, she had dark hair, which was at odds with the producers’ vision for the character, who was intended to be blonde. With little time to spare, Garver’s mother intervened, determined to help her daughter meet the casting expectations.
“I was at the sorority house and my mum called me, urging me to prepare for the audition,” Garver explained. “She said, ‘They want somebody that’s 15. The show has already been sold, so wear something that makes you look young.’” This call prompted her mother to bring over a product called Streaks and Tips — a hair spray meant to lighten hair colour instantly.
However, the last-minute cosmetic change did not go as planned. By the time Garver arrived at Desilu Studios to audition for producer and creator Ed Hartmann, the temporary dye had begun to shift hues in an unexpected and unfortunate manner. “I was sitting there talking to Ed Hartmann, and he suddenly asked, ‘What’s the matter with your hair?’” Garver recalled, adding a humorous twist to the situation, “I said, ‘Yes, it’s turning green.’”
Despite the unexpected hair fiasco, Garver’s journey did not end there. Displaying her resourcefulness, she sought an alternative solution to re-enter the audition. “I went to Max Factor and got this long blonde wig,” she explained, recalling how wardrobe assisted her by providing a blue-and-white checked dress. “I looked like Alice in Wonderland, I swear to God I did,” she chuckled.
Garver returned for the screen test in her new ensemble and managed to impress the director. The next day, she received the career-altering news through her agent: “‘Okay, you got the job,’” he said. This pivotal moment propelled Garver into the spotlight, making her a household name throughout the late 1960s.
During her time on *Family Affair*, Garver played the role of the responsible older sister, helping to raise her younger twin siblings alongside their uncle and their devoted butler. The series blended comedic elements with poignant family themes, resonating with audiences and contributing to its enduring legacy.
Reflecting on the iconic role that defined her early career, Garver recounted some memorable feedback she received after securing the part. “I was told, ‘Never wear that wig again and never wear that dress.’” Despite the advice, it is clear that Garver’s spirit and determination, combined with a touch of serendipity, paved the way for her successful career in television.
Now, decades later, Garver’s recollection of that chaotic audition serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of show business. Her experiences could inspire many aspiring actors facing their own hurdles in the industry. With her charming personality and dedication, Garver has left an indelible mark on television history, forever linked to the wholesome charm of *Family Affair*.
The series remains a nostalgic favourite for many, and Garver’s stories add depth to the legacy of this cherished programme. Even six decades later, her journey illustrates not only the challenges of auditions but also the rewards that can come from unwavering perseverance.
