On May 15, 2023, authorities from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check at the residence of Karen and Donald Whitaker, an elderly couple living in Bermuda Dunes, California. Tragically, the deputies discovered the couple, aged 79 and 80 respectively, deceased with serious injuries. The investigation has indicated that their deaths may be the result of a murder-suicide, although the specifics of the case remain under scrutiny.

According to friends, Karen had recently been a victim of a sophisticated scam involving someone pretending to be the well-known actor Tom Selleck. Joy Miedecke, a close companion of the couple, relayed that Karen had requested financial assistance from friends, claiming that Selleck’s manager was in dire need after the passing of his wife. This revelation reportedly left Donald feeling humiliated and distraught, leading him to express his inability to comprehend Karen’s actions.

Evidence collected by the sheriff’s office suggests a distressing sequence of events that contributed to the couple’s deaths. Miedecke described how, last summer, Karen had been lured into correspondence with a person or persons posing as Selleck. The scammers initially exploited emotions triggered by a Facebook post Karen made about a friend’s death, promising her an opportunity to meet the actor during an event in exchange for money.

As time went on, this fraudulent scheme escalated, with demands for ever-increasing sums of money, reportedly amounting to tens of thousands of pounds. Miedecke, concerned for her friend, and several others warned Karen about the deception. However, she remained unconvinced, possibly due to early-stage dementia, according to Miedecke.
“I think she genuinely believed she was in contact with Tom Selleck,” Miedecke stated, adding that despite friends’ concerns, they were unable to persuade Karen to cease her financial interactions with the scam. Adult protective services were called in, and workers visited the couple, during which time Donald first became aware of the financial troubles Karen faced.
Following discussions with family members, Karen’s adult children intervened by restricting her access to financial accounts and effectively severing her ties to her credit cards. Despite these measures, Karen found ways to continue sending money, with Miedecke estimating that she may have sent at least $30,000 to the scammer, although the total is still unclear.
Donald, deeply affected by the financial strain and Karen’s unwillingness to acknowledge the scam, reportedly faced considerable emotional turmoil. Friends noted that he expressed feelings of helplessness, contending with the burden of financial loss and the distress it brought to their lives. Although he mentioned suicidal thoughts, he insisted that he could never go through with such an act, fearing Karen would mismanage what little financial resources they had left.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that prior reports of financial elder abuse had been filed, though they have not provided further commentary due to the ongoing investigation. Thus far, officials have clarified that there is no indication that the unknown perpetrator(s) linked to the financial crimes played a role in the couple’s deaths.
As this heartbreaking story unfolds, Miedecke hopes by speaking publicly, she can raise awareness about the dangers of such scams, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals. “The implications of financial theft on those who can no longer generate income are devastating,” she remarked, reflecting on the overarching tragedy of the situation.
In light of this incident, the sheriff’s office encourages anyone with information to come forward and contact their homicide investigation team. The case is a sobering reminder of the tragic consequences that can stem from financial exploitation, particularly among the elderly.
