Sheinelle Jones, co-host of ‘Today with Jenna & Sheinelle’, has recently opened up about the profound loss of her husband, Uche Ojeh, and the impact it has had on their family. The couple was married for 18 years and had three children together: Kayin, 16, and twins Clara and Uche Jr., both aged 13. In a candid discussion with journalist Anderson Cooper on his podcast, “All There Is with Anderson Cooper,” Jones shared her reflections on grief and parenting in the wake of her husband’s untimely death.

Ojeh, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, passed away at 45 in May 2025. Jones revealed that her husband did not write letters to their children before he died, a decision that was underscored by his reluctance to confront the reality of his prognosis. She explained, “If I say, ‘Hey, I think you should write something for the kids,’ that means that I think you’re not going to make it.” This hesitation ultimately prevented Ojeh from documenting his thoughts and feelings for their children.

Jones noted that their conversations about writing these letters often left her husband feeling vulnerable, as it would mean accepting that his illness might not grant him a positive outcome. “I think for him to write it would have been accepting that maybe, it wasn’t going to go that way, his way, and I don’t think he was willing to do that,” she said. As time passed, it became increasingly clear that the opportunity to create those cherished messages for their children was slipping away.
In an effort to preserve the precious memories that remained, Jones began recording family moments in the days leading up to Ojeh’s death. “Towards the end, I started videotaping everything whereas before I didn’t,” she admitted, recounting the pride she saw in her husband’s face as their son played the guitar and their daughter showcased her talent in musical theatre. These recordings have become invaluable for the family, serving as a poignant reminder of their father’s love and support.
Following Ojeh’s passing, Jones received an outpouring of support from her colleagues on the ‘Today’ show, who expressed their anguish during a live broadcast shortly after the news was announced. Co-host Savannah Guthrie conveyed the shared heartbreak, stating, “There are no words for the pain that we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children.” This overwhelming outpouring of love and solidarity highlights the strong community surrounding Jones and her family during this challenging time.
Despite her loss, Jones has made the conscious choice to shield her children from the harsh spotlight of fame. However, her kids surprised her during an April episode of ‘Today’, celebrating her new book, “Through Mom’s Eyes.” This unexpected appearance was incredibly moving for Jones, who described the moment as “one of the most special moments of my life.”
She drew attention to her protective nature, referring to herself as a “mama bear.” Jones expressed her commitment to keeping her children’s lives private while sharing glimpses of their journey together. “Honestly, I’m a mama bear, a mama lion. I’m very protective of them,” she explained. When her children made their surprise visit to the studio, Jones was filled with pride as she recognised how much they have grown and changed during this tumultuous chapter of their lives.
Reflecting on the celebration, Jones revealed that seeing her children’s pride in her accomplishment meant the world to her. “We’ve just been through so much, and I could see in their faces that they’re proud of me,” she said. This sentiment resonates deeply with many parents; validation from one’s children can be immensely fulfilling.
As they navigate life without their father, Jones continues to record moments and cherish memories for her children. Though the path of grief is challenged by the memories of her husband, she focuses on instilling love, strength, and resilience in her family. With her efforts to document their lives, Jones aims to keep the spirit of her late husband alive for Kayin, Clara, and Uche Jr., ensuring they grow up with a sense of their father’s love.
Sheinelle Jones embodies courage in sharing her story, reminding audiences of the enduring nature of love and the importance of preserving memories in the face of loss.
