A mother from Kentucky is raising serious concerns after alleging that her nonverbal son with autism was assaulted by a staff member at a local elementary school. Tiphanee Lee, the boy’s mother, expressed her distress during a press conference on 15 May, following the release of shocking footage she recorded secretly to reveal the situation her son faced.

Lee indicated that her eight-year-old son, Semaj’, had shown unusual behaviour at home in recent months, which raised alarm within their family. After receiving complaints from the school about his conduct that was inconsistent with his typical behaviour, she felt compelled to investigate further. Believing that something was amiss, she devised a plan to install a discreet camera hidden within her son’s hair.

The footage, recorded on 13 May, has caused a major upset for Lee and her family. During her press conference, she described her anguish at what she witnessed in the video. “Our child was put in a situation where he was scared, overwhelmed and powerless,” she stated, condemning the actions of the staff member involved. The footage reportedly shows a school employee reacting aggressively, demanding Semaj’ to “get off of me now,” intensifying the distressing scene as the child can be heard screaming.
Lee stressed that her son was supposed to be safe in the embrace of the school environment, where he was expected to be cared for and respected. “We trusted his school to protect him, to care for him, and to treat him with dignity. Instead, he was harmed, silenced and failed by the very people who were supposed to keep him safe,” she proclaimed. By sharing the video, Lee hopes to shed light on the issues faced by children with disabilities and advocate for change.
In wake of these allegations, the school’s principal, Deb Rivera, sent a letter to the families of Field Elementary School, reaffirming that their children’s safety is of paramount importance. Acknowledging that they had received numerous concerns regarding a social media post that detailed the allegations, Rivera emphasised that the school administration is reviewing the incident seriously in collaboration with the Jefferson County Public Schools district.
The Jefferson County Public Schools district has thus far not released specific statements about any personnel actions. They indicated that they are following established policies and procedures to thoroughly investigate the claims. Meanwhile, the Louisville Metro Police Department and Kentucky’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services have also not provided comments, citing privacy laws and ongoing investigations.
Lee and her partner are adamant that the staff member involved should face termination and are calling for a comprehensive investigation. Their primary aim is to ensure that this type of incident does not occur again, not only for Semaj but for all children in vulnerable situations. “I am his voice, and I will speak for him,” she reiterated, embodying her role as an advocate for her son.
At the conclusion of her address, Lee appealed to lawmakers for legislative changes that would mandate the installation of cameras in classrooms to protect students, especially those who may be unable to communicate their distress. She firmly stated, “No parent should have to question whether their child is safe at school,” highlighting the urgent need for greater accountability and protection of children in educational settings.
This case has sparked an ongoing conversation about the rights of children, particularly those with disabilities, and the responsibilities of schools to offer a safe and nurturing environment. As parents and advocates rally around Lee and her family, the situation continues to unfold, prompting a broader scrutiny of how schools nationwide safeguard their students.
