A 40-year-old man from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, has been charged with harassment and bias intimidation following a disturbing incident captured on video. The suspect, named Thomas Diiorio, was filmed shouting at a Black neighbour in what has been described as a racially charged confrontation on 18 May.

The Mount Laurel Police Department (MLPD) learned of the incident when they were called to respond to a separate event involving juveniles at approximately 6:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found the two parties separated and, after initial discussions, both parents involved claimed wrongdoing by the other. However, neither sought criminal charges at that time, as stated in a police release issued on 20 May.
It wasn’t until a video of the confrontation was submitted to police that the case took a more serious turn. The footage shows Diiorio yelling aggressively at a woman, reportedly his fellow resident, demanding that she “get the f— out of here” and ordering her to “get in your car.” As the woman attempted to walk away while on her phone, she could be heard calling for assistance, urging anyone nearby to contact the police.

During the follow-up investigation, law enforcement’s review of the video led them to file a criminal complaint against Diiorio. According to the report, Diiorio is quoted as having used the phrase “you people,” which he later acknowledged was directed at Black individuals. Allegedly, he justified this remark, stating that he did not experience such confrontations with White people.
Diiorio was apprehended by police on 20 May and taken into custody at Burlington County Jail. He made a court appearance the following day, where he was ordered to have no contact with the victim of the incident. Diiorio was subsequently released, but is scheduled for another court hearing in July.
The viral nature of the incident has drawn significant public attention, highlighting ongoing concerns surrounding racial tensions in communities. Mount Laurel, a predominantly White suburb, has been scrutinised for its diversity dynamics, especially as incidents like this serve to expose underlying issues.
Following the explosion of interest in the situation, various organisations and local residents have called for a wider conversation about race relations in the area, demanding that such incidents not be taken lightly. The MLPD has acknowledged the importance of addressing these types of interactions and reiterated their commitment to investigating cases involving bias and harassment.
As the legal process unfolds, the community remains watchful, with many citizens expressing their desire for a resolution that fosters healing rather than division. The events surrounding Diiorio’s actions have sparked discussions about accountability and the responsibilities of citizens to engage in respectful dialogue with their neighbours, regardless of race.
In the meantime, the Mount Laurel Police Department continues to investigate the incident, as they strive to maintain safety and communal harmony in the neighbourhood. Local residents and community leaders alike are urging for a collective effort to ensure such occurrences are adequately addressed and do not recur in the future.
