Canadian author Elsie Silver, a rising star in the realm of steamy western romance, has taken the book world by storm, particularly on the social media platform BookTok. With her latest work, ‘Fever Dream’, coinciding with the announcement of a television adaptation of her popular ‘Rose Hill’ series for Prime Video, Silver is experiencing a whirlwind of excitement.

Silver is best known for her engaging romantic tales set against stunning rural backdrops. She first began her writing journey amidst the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic, after years spent working as a freelance editor in academia. Initially, writing was not on her radar for a career change. When inspiration struck, largely thanks to her mother’s encouragement, Silver decided to take a leap of faith and start penning her own stories.
Her debut novel, ‘Off to the Races’, published in 2021, was experimental for Silver, who self-published this enemies-to-lovers tale set in the fictional locale of Ruby Creek. “I got the bug,” Silver says, reflecting on her initial writing experience. “I wanted to do it all over again, but better.” This drive resulted in the compilation of her beloved series, including ‘Rose Hill’, ‘Chestnut Springs’, and ‘Gold Rush Ranch’.
Having grown up in Alberta, surrounded by horses and ranching, it was only natural for Silver to embed these themes into her narratives. “They say write what you know — and I know horses and ranching,” she states of her inspirations. Her novels encapsulate the charm of small-town life, and ‘Fever Dream’ stays true to this tradition. This latest release is the first book in the new ‘Emerald Lake’ series and revolves around the captivating relationship between bull rider Emmett Bush and location consultant Julia Silva on the set of a reality dating show named ‘Romance Ranch’.
Focusing on the dynamics of reality television presented new writing challenges for Silver, who didn’t hesitate to tackle the industry’s less glamorous aspects, such as workplace harassment. She notes the prevalence of such issues among women in various professions, remarking, “I don’t think I know a woman in the workplace who hasn’t encountered something on some scale.” This approach adds depth and relatability to the storytelling, far beyond the romantic elements.
Silver’s characters often reflect a desire for redemption, particularly evident in the character of Emmett, who has previously appeared as somewhat of an antagonist in her stories. “I love a redemption arc,” she admits, highlighting the layered motivations that drive her narratives. The complexity of Emmett’s character, coupled with the forbidden nature of his romance with Julia, helps maintain tension throughout the book.
Significantly, Silver’s rapid rise to popularity has led to the adaptation of her ‘Rose Hill’ books into a television series with Prime Video. As an executive producer on the show, Silver is actively involved in the adaptation process, collaborating closely with head writer Heidi Cole McAdams. “I’m loving that process,” she says. “It’s going to be really exciting to see it come to life in a way that isn’t completely mine.”
While adaptations can often elicit pressure from both fans and authors alike, Silver maintains a grounded philosophy. She believes that it’s impossible to please everyone but trusts her creative instincts. For her, the goal is to create a TV show that aligns with the essence of her novels and embodies a narrative she would enjoy watching.
The recent surge of interest in romance narratives, both in literature and on-screen, has not escaped Silver’s notice. “It’s really exciting to see [romance] taking centre stage and being accepted across multiple industries,” she notes. Her excitement captures a broader cultural shift regarding the appreciation of genres traditionally associated with women.
Reflecting on her journey, Silver describes the experience as “exciting and surreal”, with the anticipation of her novel release being amplified by the associated television project. “Release is already such an exciting time, but when I add all the TV stuff on top of it, it is really the cherry on top,” she shares.
‘Fever Dream’ is now available for purchase through Atria Books, and with the forthcoming adaptation, it seems that Elsie Silver’s star is only set to rise further in the literary and entertainment landscape.
