The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has announced expectations for a below-average hurricane season in the Atlantic for 2026, influenced primarily by the effects of El Niño. This prediction comes as part of an assessment released on May 21, which highlights key factors that could impact storm activity in the region.

According to NOAA’s meteorologists, there is a 55% probability that the Atlantic will experience fewer storms this year, contrasting sharply with a mere 10% likelihood of an above-normal season. This forecast arises from a combination of climatic conditions, with El Niño being a prominent factor. El Niño is characterised by unusually warm water temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, which can significantly affect weather patterns worldwide.
Forecasters have indicated that this year’s hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 to November 30, may see between eight and 14 named storms. Of these, it is anticipated that around three to six will develop into hurricanes, with only one to three reaching the status of a major hurricane, categorised as a Category 3 storm or higher. For context, a typical season in the Atlantic records approximately 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

Ken Graham, Director of NOAA’s National Weather Service, acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the extent to which this El Niño will play a role in the upcoming hurricane season. He stated, “Although El Niño’s impact in the Atlantic Basin can often suppress hurricane development, there is still uncertainty in how each season will unfold.”
Graham also urged communities to remain vigilant, stressing that, despite the prediction of a below-average season, preparation should not be disregarded. “Don’t let the words ‘below average’ change the way you prepare,” he advised during a press conference. “All it takes is one storm to have a significant impact.”
In a stark contrast to the situation in the Atlantic, NOAA has forecasted a busy hurricane season for the eastern and central Pacific regions. The agency projects a 70% chance of an above-normal season in these areas, with an expected range of five to 22 named storms. This discrepancy between the Atlantic and Pacific hurricane seasons illustrates the complex nature of meteorological patterns across different regions.
The emergence of El Niño, with predictions of it intensifying during the peak months of the Atlantic hurricane season, has garnered considerable attention from meteorologists and climate scientists alike. Its influence is expected not only to reduce the number of storms in the Atlantic but could also lead to a more active hurricane season in the Pacific.
