A team of researchers has made an astonishing discovery in the Himalayan forests of northern India, unveiling a new species of spider that bears a striking resemblance to Hawaii’s well-known happy-face spider. Named Theridion himalayana, or the “Himalayan happy-face spider,” this unique arachnid showcases a bright, smile-like marking on its back and was found at high altitudes in Uttarakhand, marking its first known appearance outside of the Pacific region.

Previously, it was widely believed that happy-face spiders were exclusive to Hawaii, where they have gained fame for their distinctive facial patterns. The revelation in the Indian Himalayas, as reported by The Independent and documented in the journal Evolutionary Systematics, now indicates that this species has undergone a separate evolutionary process, with genetic analyses revealing an 8.5% difference from its Hawaiian counterpart.

Devi Priyadarshini, one of the researchers leading the study, explained that this exciting discovery was quite unexpected. Initially focused on studying ants during a field survey, the breakthrough came when spider specimens collected from remote elevations were sent to her for identification. “I froze in shock because I had seen the Hawaiian spider during my master’s program,” Priyadarshini recalled. “I knew instantly we had a jackpot because of its striking resemblance.”

The name Theridion himalayana was chosen to reflect the ecological significance of the Himalayan region, with her co-author Ashirwad Tripathy emphasising that they wanted to honour the natural heritage of the mighty mountain range, which is known for its remarkable biodiversity. “These mountains guard our country and hold a plethora of wildlife,” he stated.
Researchers conducted their field study across three distinct locations—Makku, Tala, and Mandal—and documented a staggering 32 different colour variations or “morphs” of the new spider species. This extensive diversity highlights the unique adaptations that may exist within the populations inhabiting various altitudes and microenvironments.
Despite the eye-catching nature of its markings, the precise function of the spider’s signature “smile” is still a mystery to scientists. “These patterns definitely help them survive better in the wild,” Priyadarshini remarked. “However, it remains unclear why they have developed such patterns on their back and what specific role they play in their life cycle.”
Interestingly, researchers observed that the Himalayan happy-face spiders were often found residing on ginger plants in Uttarakhand. This behaviour draws a curious parallel to the Hawaiian variants, which also frequent ginger, known to be invasive on the islands. Priyadarshini pondered, “How did the spiders choose an invasive species like ginger?” This intriguing question opens the door for further inquiry and ongoing research.
