A 64-year-old Florida middle school teacher is facing serious charges after allegedly instructing a student to strike a classmate. Judith Clark, who teaches sixth grade at Electa Lee Magnet Middle School in Bradenton, was arrested following an incident that took place on 13 May.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Clark became increasingly frustrated with a student who was reportedly talking too much during class. In an attempt to control the situation, she is said to have posed a provocative question to the class, asking, “Who wants to slap him?” when the disruptive student continued to speak out of turn.
Following her initial inquiry, when no students volunteered, Clark allegedly repeated her request. The disruptive student continued to talk, prompting her to close the classroom window blinds and subsequently instruct a 12-year-old student to hit the boy, as per the sheriff’s office statement. The 12-year-old, feeling compelled to comply with the teacher’s order, reportedly administered a gentle slap to the face of the other child.
Once the incident was disclosed to the student’s parents, they promptly notified the authorities, leading to the initiation of an investigation. Court records indicate that the victim acknowledged he was, in fact, engaging with classmates when Clark directed this behaviour.
As the investigation unfolded, school officials took immediate action by placing Clark on administrative leave, ensuring she had no further contact with students. On 19 May, she was apprehended without incident and charged with child abuse without great bodily harm. Following her arrest, Clark was released from Manatee County Jail after posting a $7,500 bond. A condition of her release stipulates that she must refrain from any contact with the victim or individuals under the age of 18.
Randy Warren, a public information officer for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, expressed his concern regarding the incident, noting that a teacher’s misuse of authority in intimidating students is particularly troubling. He stated, “It’s troubling because she used her position of authority to intimidate kids in this classroom.”
Jamie Carson, Director of Communications for Manatee County Schools, characterised the incident as “deeply concerning” and beneath the expectations set for school staff members. She emphasised the district’s commitment to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students, stating that the actions taken by Clark do not reflect this commitment.
Judith Clark began her tenure with the Manatee County School District in 2019. Although she had been scheduled to continue at Electa Lee Magnet Middle School until 29 May 2026, her employment was non-renewed just a few weeks prior on 8 April.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Clark has secured legal representation to address the charges she faces. The case serves as a critical reminder of the importance of maintaining appropriate teacher-student boundaries in educational settings, as well as the serious implications of failing to uphold them.
