A new iteration of the popular Smugglers Run ride is set to launch at Disneyland Park on May 22, offering visitors a unique mission that features the beloved duo of The Mandalorian and Grogu. This exciting update is part of a broader revitalisation of the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge area, transitioning to a storyline situated closer to the timeline of the original Star Wars trilogy.
The revitalised Smugglers Run will engage participants in a fresh adventure that draws connections to the classic films as well as the latest series. Disneyland’s efforts to enhance the experience for fans are evident as the park embraces a narrative that allows iconic figures such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader to appear at Black Spire Station.
As one might expect, classic fan-favourite Chewbacca will not be present in this reimagining, prompting Disney to innovate. In place of the previously enjoyed “Chewbacca mode,” a new Easter egg has been introduced, dubbed “Grogu mode.” Reports indicate that this option increases Grogu’s presence throughout the ride, potentially making it a delightful challenge for guests aimed at successfully completing the task assigned by Hondo Ohnaka.
Guests who take on the gunner roles will need to collaborate and press designated buttons to activate Grogu mode. However, all members of the cockpit group will need to consent for this mode to be operational, adding an element of teamwork to the experience.
Significantly, the enhancements will not stop at merely amending the ride’s Easter eggs. The functionality of the ride has been adjusted so that every participant, regardless of their role as pilot, gunner, or engineer, will play an essential part in determining the outcome of their mission. “Your engineers are going to be your lifeline to Grogu,” explained Disneyland spokesperson Juan Aldava, underlining the new dynamic between the roles.
Moreover, the decisions and actions taken by the engineers will influence which mission each group embarks upon. Aldava emphasised that engagement will be a hallmark of the new experience: “You get to participate in a couple of adventures, all depending on what your engineers and what the rest of your cockpit decide.”
The original Galaxy’s Edge area was first unveiled in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios park in 2019, themed around the sequel trilogy which debuted in recent years. With this latest update, Disney takes the narrative back approximately 30 years to align it with beloved characters and scenarios from classic entries such as *A New Hope*, *The Empire Strikes Back*, and *Return of the Jedi*.
The timing of these new experiences is particularly strategic, coinciding with the theatrical release of *The Mandalorian and Grogu* set for May 22. In addition to this exciting debut, Disneyland is also hosting its annual Kids Rule Summer event, designed to offer families an affordable way to enjoy the park.
As part of the summer festivities, Disneyland is introducing discounted tickets for children aged 3 to 9, starting at just £50 for both Single-Day and Park Hopper options.
