Brooklyn Mom, 34, Who Drowned Her 3 Young Children on Coney Island Beach Learns Fate in ‘Heartbreaking’ Case

Erin Merdy, a 34-year-old resident of Coney Island, Brooklyn, has been sentenced to a prison term of 20 years to life for the tragic murders of her three children. The chilling incident took place in September 2022, resulting in the deaths of seven-year-old Zachary Merdy, four-year-old Lilana Stephens Merdy, and three-month-old Oliver Bondarev.

The sentencing occurred on 20th May 2026, and was presided over by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun. The case has garnered significant media attention, particularly due to the harrowing nature of the crimes, which involved the mother drowning her children in the ocean close to their home. Merdy had admitted guilt to three counts of first-degree murder in the previous March.

According to the Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, the murders happened in the early hours of 12th September 2022, around 12:37 a.m. Merdy had taken her children to the beach near West 35th Street, where the horrific act was committed. Approximately an hour later, she was seen walking alone towards Brighton Beach, more than two miles away, where she was later found by family members who were concerned for the children’s welfare.

At the time, Merdy reportedly made phone calls to relatives, appearing distressed. When questioned about her children, her evasiveness raised concerns, prompting her family and the children’s father to seek help. Emergency services were called, leading to a search for the children which ended in tragedy. At around 4:30 a.m. on that same day, authorities discovered the children on the beach, unresponsive and soaked.

Family members later expressed their belief that Merdy may have been suffering from postpartum depression, a serious mental health condition that can affect new mothers and lead to severe consequences if left untreated. After the children were found, they were rushed to Coney Island Hospital, but sadly they had already succumbed to their injuries.

Following her arrest, Merdy was observed to be in a disturbed state, reportedly telling family members that her children were “gone” and expressing remorse. The District Attorney’s office constructed a narrative characterised by heartbreak and encountered various complexities in its investigation.

In a statement regarding the case, District Attorney Gonzalez emphasised the overwhelming tragedy of losing three young lives in such a manner. “Zachary, Liliana and Oliver were innocent children whose lives were taken in the most heartbreaking and unthinkable way,” he remarked. He also stressed the importance of ensuring Merdy was held accountable for her actions, noting that the sentence, while significant, could not remedy the profound loss experienced by the victims’ families.

The courtroom proceedings were deeply emotional, as the impact of the case rippled through the community and beyond. The prosecutorial team had sought the “strongest possible accountability” given the circumstances, showcasing a determination to bring justice for the children.

Merdy, whose case has highlighted the importance of mental health support for mothers, particularly in the postpartum period, will now face a lengthy prison sentence. While her life has dramatically changed as a result of her actions, the impact on her children’s family and the community remains immeasurable.

As the dust settles on this case, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, alongside the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, will continue to handle any further inquiries, though they did not provide additional comments when contacted following the sentencing.
