In an insightful interview with PEOPLE, legendary martial artist Jet Li has opened up about the profound transformation he experienced following the harrowing events of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. At the age of 63, Li spoke candidly about the life-threatening ordeal he faced while on holiday with his family in the Maldives and how it shifted his perspective on life and philanthropy.
Li was vacationing with his wife and daughters when the devastating tsunami struck, claiming thousands of lives. In his new book, *Beyond Life and Death: The Way of True Freedom*, he reflects on how this traumatic event became a pivotal moment, leading him to reassess his priorities. “I get a lot of support for my films worldwide, which I truly appreciate,” he shared. “But every time I can’t meet everyone’s expectations, like signing autographs or taking pictures, it makes me think about giving back to society.”

Before the tsunami, Li had considered the prospect of retirement and how he might contribute to charitable causes. However, the catastrophic event forced him to confront the unpredictability of life. “I was only 41 and narrowly escaped death,” he recounted. “Life is uncertain; you want to retire, but you could die before that. I realised that in the face of nature, a person is powerless. If you’re gone, you’re gone.”
Once he confirmed the safety of his family amidst the chaos, a realisation dawned on him regarding the weight of their survival. “This is the time for me to change. I need to do something to help people,” Li declared, which prompted him to establish the One Foundation in China. He initiated a campaign encouraging people to contribute a mere one Yuan, approximately 12 cents, each month. “By pooling these small donations, we can make meaningful change,” he affirmed.
Li acknowledges that his vision for the One Foundation faced initial scepticism. Many believed it would be more efficient for wealthy individuals or corporations to make substantial contributions. “People thought that asking for small contributions was futile,” he noted. However, Li advocated for the power of collective effort. “You can make a difference. After 15 years of collaboration, we’ve generated over 5 billion renminbi (around $735 million) to support those in need.”

He believes that when individuals come together to contribute even the smallest amounts, they can create significant impact. “It’s essential to understand that if everyone contributes, we can build a mountain,” he explained. This message of unity and small acts leading to major changes underscores his philosophy.
Li’s transformation post-tsunami exemplifies a broader call for global citizenship. “We mustn’t wait for external forces to save us. We all need to take responsibility for our environment and lives,” he stated. His new outlook emphasises the urgency for individuals to act for the welfare of future generations. “We owe it to them to protect our planet and each other,” Li reinforced.
The release of *Beyond Life and Death: The Way of True Freedom* offers readers insight not only into the trials Li has faced but also into his ongoing commitment to philanthropy and social responsibility. He aims to inspire others to reshape their lives in light of shared experiences and challenges.
As Jet Li continues his journey from martial arts icon to humanitarian, he remains steadfast in his belief that personal growth can occur even in the aftermath of tragedy. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the difference one person can make in the world when they choose to give back.
