Daughter of ‘Hero’ Security Guard Killed in San Diego Mosque Shooting Remembers Him as ‘Absolute Best Dad in the World’

On 18 May, a tragic mass shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including Amin Abdullah, a devoted father of eight and a security guard at the mosque. The incident is now being investigated by the police as a hate crime.

Amin Abdullah, who was known for his strong dedication to his family and community, was hailed as a hero by local officials and family members alike. His daughter, Hawaa Abdullah, described him as a best friend and an exceptional father during a press conference on 19 May. “He was the best, absolute best dad in the world,” she expressed, emphasising his role as both a protective father and a community figure.

The San Diego Police Department has credited Abdullah with playing a significant role in mitigating the threat posed by the assailants. Police Chief Scott Wahl stated that Abdullah’s efforts helped to streamline the situation toward the mosque’s front area, thus potentially saving many lives. Wahl described Abdullah’s actions as “heroic,” asserting that his bravery undoubtedly prevented a higher death toll.

Mayor Todd Gloria likewise acknowledged Abdullah’s courage and expressed deep appreciation for his quick response during the ordeal. Community members continue to share memories of Abdullah, highlighting his commitment to ensuring the safety of children attending the centre. Sam Hamideh, a local resident, referred to him as a “martyr” for his unwavering dedication. “He would always make sure the community was safe,” Hamideh recounted, adding that Abdullah’s valor was a source of great admiration.

Witnesses have spoken fondly about Abdullah’s warm disposition and his genuine connection with others. “He greeted everyone who would come into the centre,” said Mayte Gutierrez, recalling how much he was loved by both students and teachers. Such sentiments underline the significant impact Abdullah had on those around him, further compounding the community’s grief over his untimely loss.

In the wake of the shooting, the Council on American-Islamic Relations – San Diego (CAIR-SD) launched a fundraiser to support the families of Abdullah and the other victims, Nader Awad and Abul Ezz (Mansour Kaziha). Within a short period, the initiative has raised more than £1.8 million to aid the affected families, demonstrating an outpouring of support from the community and beyond.

Chief Wahl reiterated that the courage displayed by the three victims likely saved the lives of approximately 140 children who were present during the shooting. He expressed his belief that none of the victims had died in vain, underscoring their crucial roles in averting a larger tragedy. The community’s grief is intermingled with pride for the bravery shown by Abdullah and the others.

In a concerning development, the two teens suspected of carrying out the attack were discovered deceased from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds in a vehicle near the mosque. Law enforcement is now examining the details surrounding their motive, with reports indicating that “hate rhetoric” was involved in the incident.

Law enforcement officials revealed that the mother of one of the suspects believed her son was suicidal and reported that several of her firearms were unaccounted for. She noted that her son was accompanied by someone clad in camouflage during the attack. The shooting took place during Dhul Hijjah, a significant month in the Islamic calendar, which is regarded as one of the holiest periods for Muslims.

As investigations continue, both the San Diego Police and the FBI are working to uncover further information. With community leaders calling for unity and reflection at this time, many are advocating for peace and solidarity in response to this harrowing event.
