In a heartfelt video shared on TikTok, Holli Stapleton candidly reflects on her journey as a mother to her son Landon, who was diagnosed with level three autism. While she had suspicions about her son’s development from an early age, hearing the official diagnosis still brought tears to her eyes. Stapleton, who lives in Maricopa, Arizona, describes how her instincts urged her to pay close attention to Landon’s development compared to her older son, Colson, and how those early signs led to significant changes in her family’s life.

Stapleton first noticed developmental delays when Landon was between four to six months old. A typical milestone at this age is a child’s ability to respond to their name, a key indicator that Landon was not meeting. “I saw my older son hitting milestones right on time or even a little early, while Landon was falling behind by several months,” she explains. This discrepancy prompted Stapleton to raise her concerns with Landon’s paediatrician multiple times.

As she continued to observe Landon, Stapleton detected other signs that were concerning. These included his overwhelming reactions to simple stimuli, such as mealtime, and noticeable physical behaviours. “When Landon was excited, he would clench his fists and kick his legs, which he seemed to do constantly,” she recalls. Such behaviours were reaffirmed when she began seeing similar stories shared by other parents on TikTok. “As a mother, you just know. The more I watched, the more sure I became that I needed to pursue this further,” Stapleton recounted.
After raising her concerns at Landon’s nine-month check-up, she was initially told it was too soon for a diagnosis and to monitor the situation. However, when she revisited the issue at Landon’s one-year appointment, she was referred to a specialist. It was a complicated wait, taking an additional six months before Landon underwent an evaluation. The diagnosis of level three autism and a speech delay posed a daunting challenge for Stapleton, but it also opened doors for her to seek the necessary support and services for her son.
“It was terrifying at first,” she admits. “You don’t know what to expect with such a profound diagnosis, and it brings a lot of sadness. But it also provides an opportunity to learn how to support him as he grows.” The designation of level three autism indicates that Landon will require substantial assistance throughout his life, but it has also prompted Stapleton to take proactive steps towards his care.
In addition to emotional support for herself and her family, Stapleton has initiated various therapies for Landon, such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, and sensory therapies to aid his development. Despite being on the verge of welcoming another child into the family, she remains committed to giving Landon the best possible start. “I want to set him up for success. Every effort counts,” she maintains.
The process of sharing her experiences through social media has also proved beneficial, not just for her but for other parents who might be facing similar situations. “I received numerous messages from parents asking for advice and sharing their own concerns,” she shares. Her primary message to them is straightforward: Trust your instincts and consult with your paediatrician if you notice developmental issues. “Don’t hesitate—go until you’re taken seriously,” she urges.
Stapleton emphasises the importance of community among parents of children with autism. “It helps to know that you’re not alone,” she says. “I follow many accounts of parents with similar experiences, and it’s comforting to feel seen.”
While adjusting to the realities of raising a child on the autism spectrum may have its challenges, Stapleton recognises the joy that Landon brings to their family. “Getting a diagnosis isn’t a death sentence. It might feel overwhelming at the start, but there is immense love and joy in raising a child like Landon. He has a beautiful spirit and is our happiest child thus far,” she concludes, highlighting the profound impact her son has had on her life.
Stapleton’s story resonates with many families navigating similar challenges, reminding others that seeking help is crucial and that every child has their own unique journey. Through determination and advocacy, she continues to strive for a better future for Landon and a supportive environment for families dealing with autism.
