Idris Elba has made headlines once again, this time at the Los Angeles premiere of his latest film, “Masters of the Universe,” an adaptation of the classic Mattel toy franchise. The event took place at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre on 18 May 2026, where Elba discussed not only his role but also the challenges of maintaining his impressive physique at the age of 53.

Elba takes on the character of General Man-At-Arms, also known as Duncan, a key figure in the new adaptation. He plays the right-hand man to Nicolas Galitzine, who plays the lead role of He-Man/Prince Adam. At the premiere, Elba reflected on the difficulties of staying ‘jacked’ as he ages, acknowledging the physical requirements of the role but admitting it’s not sustainable in the long term. “No, I mean, I’m 53 years old. I can’t stay jacked,” he explained. “But at the same time, I have to stay in shape so I can run and punch.”
Known for his involvement in action-packed franchises, including the “Thor” films and “The Suicide Squad,” Elba expressed enthusiasm about returning to the world of superheroes. He revealed that his love for “Masters of the Universe” stemmed from his childhood. “It was a nostalgia of Masters of the Universe,” he remarked, noting that while Spider-Man was his favourite character when he was young, the appeal of “Masters of the Universe” resonated deeply with him.

The actor elaborated on his role, detailing how he aimed to bring a fresh perspective to Duncan, a character previously portrayed by Jon Cypher in the 1987 film adaptation. “To get to play Duncan and change him, make him look like me, was a real … it was a treat,” Elba shared. He mentioned infusing the character with a bit of comedic flair, which added to his excitement about the project.
As for his extensive experience in action films, Elba noted that “Masters of the Universe” is distinct from previous roles, citing the physicality involved in this particular project. “I’ve done quite a few action films over the last three years. Some a little bit more cerebral action like ‘Hijack,’ but this has been a lot of fighting,” he stated.
The film, set in the fantastical world of Eternia, sees He-Man guided to his destiny through the Sword of Power. Alongside Galitzine, Camila Mendes portrays Teela, a warrior described as “the woman of action leading the charge.” Elba portrays an “old school tough guy” as Duncan, who is not only a mentor to He-Man but also a pivotal figure in the battles against adversaries like Skeletor, played by Jared Leto, and the sorceress Evil-Lyn, portrayed by Alison Brie.
Teela is presented as the adoptive daughter of Man-At-Arms and the biological daughter of the Sorceress, played by Morena Baccarin. The relationship between Teela and Adam is explained as those of childhood friends who grow into fighters alongside their eclectic group of allies, including characters like Ram-Man, Mekaneck, Fisto, and the loyal feline companion, Battle Cat.
The official synopsis of “Masters of the Universe” reveals Adam’s quest to save his family and his world. To do so, he must embrace his powers and join forces with Duncan/Man-At-Arms and Teela, ultimately stepping into the role of He-Man, the powerful warrior destined to protect the universe.
Fans eagerly await the film’s release, scheduled to hit theatres on 5 June. With a mixture of nostalgia and modern reinterpretation, “Masters of the Universe” aims to attract both long-time adherents of the franchise and a new generation of viewers ready to engage with this iconic tale. Elba’s return to action in this capacity has certainly sparked interest, marking yet another exciting chapter in his prolific career.
