At 68 years old, Jenny Slatten has become a beloved presence on the reality show, known for her colourful personality and relationship with 38-year-old Sumit Singh. They have been participants in several seasons of the series since their introduction in “The Other Way” back in 2019. The couple discovered Jenny’s diagnosis in December 2025, just one year after she began experiencing concerning symptoms.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a severe neurodegenerative condition that progressively compromises nerve cells in both the brain and spinal cord. The deterioration caused by ALS leads to considerable muscle weakness, impairing mobility and speech. Jenny’s first signs of illness were noticed in December 2024 when she choked severely while trying to drink water. The thought was especially poignant for Jenny, as her father had also succumbed to ALS over a decade earlier.

Their initial consultations led some doctors to speculate the issue was merely “a little clot” in her brain, but a subsequent opinion brought the devastating truth—the diagnosis was indeed ALS. “We cried and held each other,” Jenny recounted, speaking candidly about the fear that followed their diagnosis.
Despite the daunting implications of ALS, Sumit conveyed that the doctors indicated Jenny’s form of the disease is progressing slowly. The couple now finds themselves navigating new terrain as they explore potential treatments, although there is currently no cure for ALS.
