In Waco, Texas, Kaleb Blain, a former 9-1-1 dispatcher turned pitmaster, is making a significant impact in his community by providing free barbecue meals to those experiencing homelessness. Every Wednesday, Blain dedicates his time and skills to preparing meals for individuals in need, a venture that he describes as a source of purpose and fulfilment in his life.

The 36-year-old Blain embarked on this charitable endeavour after graduating from the barbecue industry, following stints at local restaurants including Terry Black’s Barbecue. His new journey began somewhat unexpectedly when he and his friend David started preparing sack lunches to distribute to the homeless. Within weeks, however, the initiative transformed into a heartfelt mission as Blain began forming connections with the individuals he served.

Blain noted that the experience allowed him to understand the daily struggles faced by homeless individuals. He realised that their needs extended beyond merely food; they required fresh water, access to medical care, and personal hygiene products. He observed a critical gap during the day when shelters typically only provide meals in the morning and a place to sleep in the evening. This sparked his desire to step up and help fill that void.
Setting up a makeshift operation in his backyard, Blain began serving about 30 people each week, with attendance growing as more individuals heard about his efforts. His menu often features budget-friendly items like hot dogs and smoked chili dogs. Collaborating with the local establishment Spaghetti Park to source additional items such as pizza has allowed him to expand the variety of meals he offers.
Over time, Blain’s involvement has stretched far beyond merely providing food. The relationships he has cultivated while serving meals have had a profound influence on him. “To see them go without things that I take for granted every day has impacted me a lot,” he explained. Blain feels a deep sense of responsibility and connection, particularly after losing his younger brother to a heroin overdose in 2015. This personal tragedy motivates him to honour his sibling’s memory by caring for others who may be enduring similar struggles.
“Every time I go down there, I’m reminded of my brother—it’s heartbreaking,” Blain remarked, sharing that many of the individuals he encounters are young and in vulnerable positions. This sense of empathy drives his commitment to serve, transforming his efforts into a meaningful way to cope with his grief. He believes that helping others can alleviate feelings of depression and anxiety, providing both him and the community with a Renewed sense of purpose.
Amidst the growing success of his initiative, Blain established a coalition named “86 Hunger” in response to the interest from others wanting to lend a hand. He has partnered with Waco Mutual Aid to expand the range of resources offered to those in need, including essential items such as feminine hygiene products and medical supplies. The initiative reflects a broader effort to make a difference and support the local community.
Looking ahead, Blain has ambitious plans to develop a brick-and-mortar establishment that would enable him to offer affordable meals and fresh water consistently. He is actively raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to purchase a larger smoker for expanding his operations and ensuring that he can serve the community every day.
Blain’s vision for his barbecue business embraces the traditional spirit of communal dining inherent in Texas barbecue culture. He believes that quality meals should be accessible to all, contrasting sharply with the often exorbitant prices found at popular barbecue joints, where a meal for a family can cost around £160. Blain aims to make high-quality food available at reasonable prices, while also providing free meals for those in need.
Through his efforts, Blain not only nourishes those who are experiencing hardship but also strengthens the bonds within the community. His work serves as a poignant reminder of the power of compassion and the importance of giving back, illustrating how one person’s initiative can significantly uplift the lives of many.
