Teen Trapped After His Car Rolls and Lands on Top of Him. Then Neighbor Hears Cries for ‘Help’

In a remarkable turn of events in Kingston, Massachusetts, an 18-year-old boy has shared his experience following a serious accident that led to him being pinned beneath his own sports utility vehicle (SUV). The incident, which occurred on 16 May, saw John Joyce trapped when the vehicle rolled backwards while he was attempting to push it to safety after it had stalled.

The troubling episode took place around 11:30 am at a residential property in the northern area of Kingston. Joyce had placed the SUV in neutral and was pushing it when, unexpectedly, it rolled back. He found himself pinned against a fence with one leg trapped underneath the back right tyre of the vehicle. In a moment of desperation, he recalled shouting for help: “I was screaming, ‘Help!’”

Fortunately, a neighbour engaged in yard work nearby saw the unfolding situation and quickly called for assistance. The Kingston Fire Department responded promptly, with Captain Joshua Hatch explaining that emergency crews used airbags to lift the rear of the SUV off Joyce, allowing them to extricate him safely from underneath.

Given the nature of the incident and the injuries he sustained, a MedFlight helicopter was summoned to the scene due to the severity of the situation. The helicopter landed at Lake Street Field next to Silver Lake Regional High School, where a lacrosse game was ongoing. Approximately 200 spectators, many of whom knew Joyce, witnessed the emergency response.

Officers from the police department, who arrived at the lacrosse field, sought assistance from the young athletes in attendance. They worked together to clear away minor debris to facilitate the safe landing of the helicopter. Thankfully, the helicopter’s arrival and subsequent operations proceeded without complications.

After being airlifted to hospital, Joyce was remarkably discharged just a few hours later. He returned home under his own power, expressing a sense of gratitude for his survival. “I’m very lucky to just be standing here,” he told reporters.

The local police department acknowledged the efforts of those present at the lacrosse game, thanking them for their quick compliance with requests and their willingness to provide assistance. This cooperation played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth landing and a swift transfer of the patient.

In addition to expressing gratitude, police also highlighted the community spirit prevalent in Kingston, stating, “Once again, Kingston shines as a community that is always willing to help a neighbour.” They also offered support resources for anyone potentially affected by the distressing incident.
