The vehicle plunged into the river at approximately 9:08 p.m. local time while attempting to cross a low-water bridge in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, located within Guangxi province. The truck was transporting workers to a sweet potato farm when the accident took place, raising concerns about the safety protocols for transporting large groups of individuals in such conditions.

Rescue efforts commenced soon after the incident, and by around 2 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, five individuals had been successfully rescued from the water. However, one of the persons who was retrieved soon after the truck plunged unfortunately succumbed to their injuries at the scene, highlighting the precariousness of the situation.

Tragically, a missing woman was later discovered deceased on the morning of May 18. Her body was recovered approximately three kilometres downstream from the accident site, near Yongquan village in Luoyang township. The news only intensified the search for the remaining eight individuals who are still missing following the accident.
Emergency services have mobilised around 65 fire rescue personnel who are conducting search operations at twelve different locations along the river. They are utilising sonar detectors, diving equipment, and mobile lighting to aid their efforts in locating the missing persons.
Local authorities suspect that severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, may have played a significant role in this tragic event. Reports indicate that such weather had prompted mudslides and strong currents in the surrounding area, raising the risk of accidents.
The National Meteorological Centre in China issued a yellow alert for rainstorms affecting parts of northern China, including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Henan, and Guangdong during the weekend of the incident. Such weather advisories underscore the challenges faced during rescue operations and highlight the necessity for vigilance during adverse weather conditions.
The devastation caused by this accident has drawn attention to the potential hazards associated with transporting individuals across unstable or dangerous waterways, especially under inclement weather. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances leading to the vehicle’s plunge and are expected to review safety measures surrounding bridge crossings and vehicle occupancy in future evaluations.
As rescue efforts continue and the search for the missing individuals persists, the community is urged to come together in support of the victims and their families during this difficult time. Further updates are awaited from local officials and the Chinese search and rescue team as they work diligently to provide assistance and uncover further details surrounding this unfortunate incident.
