Mónica Villarreal and her husband Felipe Guzman are mourning the loss of Mónica’s mother and aunt, who were travelling with them on the morning of May 10 when a serious collision occurred on Interstate 75 in Broward County.

The family had been enjoying a celebratory outing, marking Mónica’s first Mother’s Day with their nine-month-old daughter, Nina. Felipe Guzman recounted how the day began in a joyful manner, with both women dressed in bright yellow attire, ready to share the special occasion with the newest member of the family. However, their day took a devastating turn while driving north on I-75, en route to Guzman’s mother’s home.
Shortly after 10:45 a.m., the family became involved in a multi-vehicle accident involving five cars near mile marker 20 on the highway. Guzman vividly remembers the moments that followed the crash, describing the panic as he heard Mónica frantically scream for her mother after the impact. The force of the collision resulted in Mónica’s mother being ejected from the vehicle.
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash was triggered by a driver who had attempted to assist a relative with a disabled vehicle but ended up driving against oncoming traffic. Following this incident, two women aged 58 and 60 were confirmed dead at the scene. Cira Quinones Lewis, the other driver involved in the mishap, has since been arrested for driving with a suspended license and is now in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) pending further legal actions.
As the family processed this harrowing event, it has come to light that baby Nina is currently in hospital following severe injuries, including a brain injury due to head trauma. She experienced cardiac arrest during the aftermath of the crash and had to be airlifted to a medical facility for urgent care.
