Missing Cat Survives Hair-Raising, 15-Mile Trip After Getting Trapped Underneath a Car

In a remarkable tale of resilience and luck, a four-year-old cat named Olaf has been reunited with his owner after embarking on an unexpected 15-mile journey while lost. This incident recently unfolded in Braintree, Essex, where the indoor cat went missing, causing his owner immense worry.

Olaf had been missing for several days when he was discovered sheltering beneath a car owned by Abigail Harrison, a manager at the animal welfare organisation Cats Protection. During the journey, which lasted about 15 miles, Olaf managed to cling onto the vehicle without the driver’s knowledge. The drama began when Harrison’s colleague, Bex Prentice, spotted a cat dislodged from under the car as it pulled into a parking lot.

Speaking about the swift rescue, Harrison recounted how her colleague acted quickly, jumping out to scoop up the bewildered cat. Another team member, Maddie Newbury, assisted by procuring a carrier to secure Olaf, preventing him from running into nearby traffic. “It all happened so quickly,” Harrison noted, emphasising the urgency of the situation.

Upon bringing Olaf back to Cats Protection, the team promptly scanned him for a microchip, which ultimately connected them with his owner, Hazel Ohler. Living in Braintree, Ohler had been deeply distressed since her pet went missing, noting Olaf’s timid nature. “He is a scaredy-cat who can be afraid of his own shadow,” she revealed, stressing how traumatic the ordeal must have been for him.

Ohler expressed her disbelief upon receiving the call informing her that Olaf had been found safe and sound. “I couldn’t believe it when Cats Protection called to say they had found him safe and well — especially when I learned how he had ended up miles from home, trapped under a car,” she explained. She feared the worst as days passed with no sign of her beloved pet.

The search for Olaf had been an intensive affair. Ohler recounted her efforts, which included putting up posters, utilising social media appeals, and even enlisting friends for a search party to comb through garages and gardens nearby. In a bid to lure him back home, she left out his litter tray and placed food and a blanket from her bed outside, hoping he would catch his familiar scent. However, her hopes began to wane as time dragged on without any leads.

Despite the stressful circumstances, Cats Protection described Olaf as “a bit skittish” upon his recovery but noted that he was physically unharmed after his unexpected journey. Following a thorough assessment by a veterinarian, Olaf was deemed to be in good health.

Harrison reflected on the circumstances of Olaf’s journey, suggesting that he may have climbed beneath the car while it was parked near her home. “He must have climbed under the bonnet or wheel arch and fallen asleep,” she speculated. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of microchipping pets, as it played a crucial role in reuniting Olaf with his owner.
