An Australian hiker has been rescued after spending an entire week lost in the rugged mountains of Taiwan, an ordeal made fortunate due to the distinct sound of his saxophone, which guided rescuers to his location. The man, who chose to be identified only as Matthew, was found on May 15 in a remote region near Taitung, situated on the eastern coastline of the island.

Matthew, aged 50, had found himself in a precarious situation after wandering into the wilderness following a disagreement with his wife. Stranded without food, adequate footwear, or electronic devices, he managed to survive by drinking rainwater and seeking refuge in a nearby cave. Despite the challenging conditions, he remained hopeful, using his saxophone to produce music in hopes of alerting potential rescuers to his whereabouts.
The search for Matthew began on May 11 when the Taitung County Fire Bureau received reports of a foreign national missing in the mountains. With cooperation from multiple agencies, a comprehensive search operation was initiated. The situation, however, was complicated by heavy rains and treacherous terrain, which delayed immediate access to Matthew after he was located using drones the following day.

Rescue teams made several attempts to reach Matthew’s location but were hampered by adverse weather conditions. To provide for his basic needs while a ground team worked their way to him, food supplies were dropped using drones. After several days of navigating the difficult landscape, rescuers were finally able to approach Matthew on foot.
Officials from the Taitung County Fire Bureau remarked that the recent rainfall was likely crucial for Matthew’s survival, as it provided him with sufficient water. Moreover, the cave seemed to shield him from potential hypothermia and the elements during his extended time in the wild.
In an interview with local media, Matthew expressed immense gratitude for his rescue, describing it as a miracle. “Thank you, Taiwan,” he stated during his first public comments after being located. He further shared that he had been reunited with his wife and has absolutely no intentions of venturing into the mountains again in the future.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Australia has acknowledged the incident and confirmed that they are offering assistance to the Australian national in Taiwan. A spokesperson mentioned, “DFAT is providing consular assistance to an Australian in Taiwan. Owing to our privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further comment.”
As Matthew reunites with his family and reflects on his ordeal, his story serves as a reminder of both the unpredictability of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. His notable use of music as a signal to rescuers highlights the unique circumstances that contributed to a successful rescue operation.
Authorities continue to advise those who venture into the wilderness to take proper precautions and to always be prepared for unexpected situations. Matthew’s experience stands as a remarkable tale of survival, ingenuity, and the vital role of community efforts in times of crisis.
