A dedicated Marvel enthusiast from the UK has achieved a Guinness World Record by adorning his body with an impressive total of 63 tattoos featuring characters from the iconic comic book franchise. Tom Radford, aged 40, has invested over $25,000 and approximately 350 hours in tattoo parlours to honour his passion for Marvel.

Radford’s love for Marvel comics can be traced back many years. His admiration for the franchise runs so deep that he even named his dog “Stanlee” after the legendary co-creator of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee. He embarked on his tattoo journey in 2007, with his first ink notably featuring the phrase “With great power comes great responsibility,” a famous quote associated with Spider-Man, which graces his chest.
However, his commitment to the art of Marvel tattoos escalated significantly in 2016 when he decided to get a tattoo of Thanos, the infamous supervillain, on his thigh. What began as a single tattoo quickly transformed into a full-fledged collection. “It was never meant to turn into what it became,” Radford commented. He also joked about experiencing a touch of addiction towards collecting these artworks.
With advancements in tattoo artistry that allow for greater detail and creativity, Radford’s enthusiasm propelled him to become a collector of increasingly intricate Marvel-themed designs. “I’m somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to Marvel,” he expressed, emphasising his desire for the tattoos to achieve a flawless appearance.
In pursuit of the record, Radford frequently faced the challenge of enduring discomfort in places that many may not comprehend, as he often opted for more concealed areas of his body to accommodate his growing collection. “I’ve endured pain in places very few will understand for tattoos no one will ever see, all for the sake of this record,” Radford shared, reflecting on the lengths he went to achieve this milestone.
The journey towards securing the world record began when he noticed that the existing record was 31 Marvel-themed tattoos held by Ryan Logsdon from the United States and Rick Scolamiero from Canada. At the time, Radford had 15 tattoos, and he decided to aim higher. “I’m a very determined individual when I set my sights on something, and I believe anything is possible,” he noted, crediting Marvel for his tenacity.
Radford’s 40th birthday served as the perfect motivator to chase the title. He described the excitement of turning 40 while being a world record holder, stating, “I planned to beat it around my 40th birthday, I loved the sound of it.” Looking ahead, he doesn’t intend to hold the record indefinitely, believing that records are made to be broken. “I know it will get beaten one day, but I also plan on beating it myself next year as I still have room for more characters,” he said, hinting at the prospect of getting additional tattoos in even more uncomfortable areas.
Among his many tattoos, Radford holds Thor as his favourite Marvel character, although he regards Spider-Man as his ultimate superhero. His devotion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe extends beyond tattoos; he frequently attends opening weekends for superhero films and has seen “Avengers: Infinity War” over 250 times in theatres.
With Radford’s journey now officially recognised by Guinness World Records, he stands as a testament to the dedication and passion that fans can hold for their beloved franchises.
