In a candid discussion with PEOPLE, Apa revealed that before accepting the role, he had limited knowledge of the era that bolstered Stewart’s illustrious career. The actor, now 28, expressed both excitement and honour at stepping into the shoes of a man he refers to as a beacon of cinematic excellence. “I am very honoured to play Jimmy Stewart, and to be a part of that Golden Age of Hollywood,” he shared.
Reflecting upon his upbringing in New Zealand, Apa admitted, “I wasn’t that familiar” with the specific history of classic films that defined a generation, such as ‘Gone with the Wind’ (1939) and ‘Citizen Kane’ (1941). He added humourously, “I grew up not really being into film, other than Jim Carrey films,” showcasing a light-hearted approach to his relatively late introduction to classic cinema.
