Boy, 10, Diagnosed with Rare Blood Cancer After Doctors Initially Dismissed Symptoms as ‘Anxiety’

A ten-year-old boy from Cambridgeshire, Arthur Saltmarsh, has endured a harrowing journey after his life-threatening condition was initially misdiagnosed. His mother, Penny Saltmarsh, has shared how a matter of weeks transformed Arthur from a fit and active child into a severely ill patient battling a rare form of blood cancer.

In January 2025, Penny took Arthur to see a doctor due to concerning symptoms, including increasing breathlessness. Initially diagnosed with a viral infection, she was told it would resolve in about a week. However, Arthur’s health deteriorated alarmingly fast. “It happened in two or three weeks that he went from being healthy and fit to being two days away from dying,” Penny, 41, recalled.

Arthur’s condition worsened to the point where he struggled even with simple daily activities, such as climbing stairs. Penny described her worries as alarming signs emerged, stating, “He started with just becoming really breathless, so even walking up the stairs, he would stop halfway and just be struggling to catch his breath.” As he lost weight and experienced fatigue, the family’s concerns only deepened.

Despite multiple visits to medical professionals, Arthur was met with various explanations for his symptoms, including asthma and even anxiety. Penny noted that during one visit, the doctor attributed Arthur’s condition to anxiety because he struggled to maintain eye contact, despite having ADHD and autism. When Penny requested a chest X-ray, she was told it was unnecessary. Relying on the doctors’ assurances, she left the clinic, hoping Arthur would improve.

Things took a dire turn when Arthur came to his parents’ room one night visibly distressed. “You could see the level of effort he was having to do just to breathe,” Penny recounted. This prompted his father to take him to the hospital, where they discovered that one side of Arthur’s chest was dramatically swollen. Diagnostic imaging revealed over three litres of fluid had accumulated around his lungs, leading to partial lung collapse. A mass on his thymus gland was also straining his heart.

The medical team took immediate action, partially sedating Arthur to safely drain the excess fluid. Unfortunately, this emergency procedure had to occur without general anaesthesia due to the advanced state of his condition. Following the intervention, doctors expressed their frustration with Arthur’s previous care, indicating that earlier diagnosis and treatment could have spared him significant trauma.

Ultimately, further tests confirmed a diagnosis of T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. Penny described the moment she received the news in profound disbelief, saying, “I honestly thought I was in a dream. I thought, ‘This isn’t real life.’ It was like a nightmare.” Faced with the heartbreaking task of explaining his condition, she reflected on how Arthur had always been a stoic child.

Since his diagnosis, Arthur has undergone four rounds of intensive chemotherapy and is now expected to require ongoing preventive treatment until June 2028. Although the mass in his chest has disappeared, the psychological and emotional toll of his illness has been significant. Penny has stepped away from her midwifery training to care for her son full-time. “He’s missed a year of school, and he just wants to be like everybody else,” she lamented, stressing the challenges of helping Arthur return to his previous self.

Reflecting on their experience, Penny expressed regret for not seeking a second opinion sooner. “I look back and think I should have requested to see another doctor,” she admitted. She urges other parents to trust their instincts when it comes to medical issues involving their children. “If you feel in your gut that you’re not happy, or if you have alarm bells going off in your head, you push. That’s your child, and you’re there to advocate for them.”

In light of their challenging situation, Arthur’s uncle has established a GoFundMe campaign to support the family during this difficult period, aiming to alleviate some of the financial stress that accompanies long-term medical care. He wrote on the fundraising page that “no family ever expects to face something like this,” but now the Saltmarsh family is navigating an arduous journey filled with uncertainties.

As Arthur continues his fight against cancer, Penny and her family remain focussed on providing him with the care and love he needs, hoping for a brighter future.
