Actor Russell Andrews Reveals ALS Diagnosis as His Fiancée-Turned-Caregiver Says, ‘I Still Want To Be Your Wife’

Russell Andrews, a well-known actor recognised for his performances in *Better Call Saul* and *Straight Outta Compton*, has publicly shared the devastating news of his diagnosis with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). During a heartfelt interview on CNN’s *The Story Is with Elex Michaelson* on May 16, Andrews, now 64, opened up about his condition alongside his fiancée, actress Erica Tazel.

Andrews revealed that he received his diagnosis in the autumn of 2025, after experiencing troubling symptoms that included muscle twitching and difficulties in performing everyday tasks. He stated, “I am a person living with ALS,” underscoring the reality of his situation. Tazel, who is set to take on the role of caregiver for Andrews, expressed a deep understanding of the emotional journey they have embarked upon since the diagnosis.

ALS, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative condition that progressively damages nerve cells in both the brain and spinal cord. This results in muscle weakness, impaired speech, and ultimately paralysis. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for ALS, and most individuals diagnosed with the disease typically have a life expectancy of three to five years post-diagnosis, although some have lived for considerably longer.

In the interview, Andrews shared how he initially misattributed his symptoms to a stroke, particularly during the challenging periods of the COVID-19 pandemic. He recounted the stress of not working for nearly three years and the subsequent industry strikes that took place in 2023. “It was a stressful time… I thought I was having pinched nerves in my neck,” he explained. His physical difficulties included dropping items and feeling unusual sensations in his arms, leading Tazel, who had been observant of his changing behaviours, to suspect that something was amiss.

Reflecting on the early signs of the disease, Tazel remembered noticing Andrews’s struggles with cleaning their pool and how his walking style had subtly changed. These observations prompted her to confront him about her growing concerns. Andrews’s situation deteriorated to the point where he lost his health insurance during the work stoppage, but once he regained coverage, he promptly sought medical help. “Within 15 minutes, the primary care physician said she would like me to see a neurologist,” he recalled, leading to his eventual diagnosis.

The moment of diagnosis was significant for both Andrews and Tazel. She described her reaction as unexpectedly calm, noting that it provided clarity for the couple amid the uncertainty they faced. “There was not a sigh of relief, but some understanding of what was happening,” Tazel recalled. In that moment, she reassured Andrews, saying, “At least now we know what it is, and I still want to be your wife.”

Their journey since learning about the diagnosis has reshaped their perspective on love and support. Tazel articulated that the experience has revealed the depth of unconditional love that exists within their relationship. Despite the challenges ahead, she remains committed to being beside Andrews as he navigates this difficult path.
