Firefighter Killed When Lumber Mill Explodes While He Was Trying to Extinguish a Fire There

A tragic incident at Robbins Lumber mill in Searsmont, Maine, has left one firefighter dead and several others severely injured following an explosion on May 15. The Maine State Fire Marshal confirmed that the explosion occurred while fire crews were attempting to extinguish a fire in one of the mill’s silos.

The emergency response started around 10:05 a.m. when firefighters from the Searsmont Fire Department, alongside various other units, arrived at the scene to address the blaze. Firefighter Andrew Cross, 27, was identified as the sole fatality in this unfortunate incident. His remains have been transported to Riposta Funeral Home in Belfast, where family and friends will pay their last respects.

Fire Marshal Shawn Esler expressed condolences, stating, “Our deepest sympathies, thoughts, and prayers are with the firefighter’s family, loved ones, and colleagues during this devastating time.” Alongside Cross, several other firefighters remain hospitalised in serious and critical condition due to the explosion. Their transportation to various hospitals across the state underscores the incident’s severity.

Dramatic images from the scene captured the silo engulfed in flames and emitting thick, dark smoke into the air, while firefighting teams from multiple departments worked diligently to bring the fire under control. Thankfully, officials have reported that the fire has been contained, although suppression efforts are still ongoing.
