Jake Rosmarin, a 29-year-old travel vlogger, is currently residing at the National Quarantine Unit in Nebraska after allegedly being exposed to the potentially deadly hantavirus while aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. The incident has not only disrupted his travel plans but also forced him into a 42-day quarantine, prompting him to seek solace in planning his upcoming wedding.

During an interview with CBS Evening News, which aired recently, Rosmarin expressed the emotional turmoil of navigating a situation filled with uncertainty. He noted that engaging in wedding planning discussions has served as a comforting distraction from the distress of his circumstances. “When I was in my darkest place on that ship, we had a wedding planning call,” he recounted, highlighting how these moments of normality brought a semblance of relief amid the chaos.
Rosmarin is set to marry his fiancé, Alex Cestari, on May 6, 2028, following their engagement in Sydney, Australia, back in August 2025. While he is excited about the future, the reality of his current situation has also brought about feelings of regret and sadness. He lamented missing his cousin’s wedding in Italy, which he had hoped to attend. “I feel terrible, but I know it’s the right decision,” Rosmarin reflected.
The series of events that led to Rosmarin’s quarantine began on May 3, the night before he was scheduled to disembark the MV Hondius. On that night, he was informed that a fellow passenger had contracted hantavirus, triggering immediate panic for Rosmarin. He turned to the internet, gathering information about the disease’s high mortality rates, which only heightened his fears.
In an attempt to calm his anxieties, Rosmarin reached out to his mother, a New York-based paediatrician, and his fiancé in Boston. Despite her efforts to reassure him with medical insights, Rosmarin felt overwhelmed, stating, “Her research wasn’t good enough.” Nonetheless, after speaking to other healthcare professionals, he received advice that helped mitigate his fears, although the anxiety lingered.
Once the cruise ship reached the Canary Islands on May 10, Rosmarin’s situation became more serious as he was informed of the need for quarantine. The following day, he was transferred to the National Quarantine Unit in Nebraska, where he has been under constant medical supervision. Since his arrival, he has been committed to maintaining a positive outlook, utilising social media to document his experiences in isolation.
Throughout this ordeal, Rosmarin has reported receiving significant emotional support from friends and family, attributing much of his coping ability to their love. However, he has also candidly shared that he has been experiencing a range of emotions throughout the process, navigating the fine line between hope for recovery and the anxiety of uncertainty.
As of now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring 41 individuals in the United States who may also be at risk of hantavirus exposure. The possible health implications of this exposure have made headlines, prompting concern among public health officials and prompting Rosmarin’s eventual quarantine.
While this unexpected pause in his travels is not what Rosmarin envisioned for his journey, he has made a determined effort to focus on the positive aspects of his life, including the joy of future plans with Cestari. His experiences serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of travel and the importance of health in today’s world.
Despite the challenges he now faces, Rosmarin remains hopeful, determined to emerge from this experience stronger and ready to embrace life’s next chapter.
