The acclaimed band 49 Winchester has recently released their latest album, “Change of Plans,” a project that frontman Isaac Gibson believes encapsulates their true musical identity better than any of their previous recordings. Drawing on over a decade of experience touring and performing, the album blends influences from various genres, including country, rock, and Appalachian soul.
Gibson, who leads the band comprised of Bus Shelton, Chase Chafin, Noah Patrick, Tim Hall, and Justin Louthian, described this time as a transformational period. At 36 years old, he notes that significant changes in their personal lives have subsequently shaped their music. “A lot of things in our personal lives have changed and we’ve grown and matured a lot,” he explained in an exclusive interview.
The album’s title, “Change of Plans,” signifies not only their artistic journey but also personal growth. Gibson emphasised that their records serve as chapters of their lives, with this latest work representing a significant turning point. “We look at records as chapters of our lives. That’s what sums it up best, is Change of Plans,” he stated.
The band’s latest work also delves into introspective themes that reflect their evolution as individuals. Gibson addressed the candid nature of the songwriting in tracks such as “Slowly,” which explores topics of growth, addiction, and the challenges of life on the road after years of relentless touring. He remarked on his complex relationship with alcohol, describing it as a hindrance that he has learned to navigate. “It was something that I’d relied on as a crutch for a really long time,” he admitted.
Honesty and vulnerability are prevalent throughout “Change of Plans.” Gibson believes that this emotional depth has grown out of their lifelong camaraderie with his bandmates. “We’ve changed from boys into men,” he said of their collective maturation since high school. Their shared experiences on the road also forged strong bonds, with Gibson reflecting that, “the road was home more than home was home.”
Despite their travels and increasing global recognition, the band remains deeply connected to their roots in Southwest Virginia. Gibson stressed the importance of representing their Appalachian heritage through their music, declaring, “We want to be torchbearers for Appalachia. They shouldn’t think 49 Winchester, country band; they should think 49 Winchester, Appalachian band.”
The band’s sound defies easy categorisation. Gibson expressed reluctance to be boxed into a single genre, believing their evolving artistry reflects the fluidity of their creative process. He stated, “We’re really not a country band, we’re really not a rock band, and we’re really not a Southern rock band. I think that is the one defining factor, the fact that we are from where we’re from.”
This creative philosophy is evident in the album’s diverse sound. The track “Changes,” a cover of Black Sabbath’s classic, resonates with the title of the album and reflects their willingness to explore varied musical landscapes. “The best songs that I’ve ever written have really just fallen out of the sky and hit me in the head like a bolt of lightning,” Gibson remarked, expressing a natural and instinct-driven approach to songwriting.
The recording process for “Change of Plans” was notably swift, completed in just eight days under the guidance of renowned producer Dave Cobb. Gibson shared insights into their collaborative efforts, stating that Cobb encouraged an instinctive approach to the album. “With Dave, it was more like, let’s just make an instinctive record,” he explained, noting that this method highlights the essence of their sound better than ever before.
Even as they experiment with new styles, Gibson maintains that the spirit of 49 Winchester remains intact. He believes that their experiences and growth have sharpened their songwriting. “The me of yesterday is definitely there, but I think that this record is really the next step forward for the band,” he assessed.
