A 14-month-old toddler is currently recovering in hospital after a frightening incident involving inhalation of decorative cake powder. Dusty Wildman, from Queensland, is receiving treatment at Queensland Children’s Hospital following emergency surgery to remove gold cake dust that he accidentally ingested while his mother, Katie Robinson, was preparing a birthday cake for a friend’s child.

Katie Robinson, a 36-year-old baker, described her son as a “fighter,” expressing hope that he may overcome the long-term effects anticipated by medical professionals. The incident occurred when Dusty managed to pull the lid off a container of gold dust powder, which was being used to give a finishing touch to the Bluey-themed cake his mother was creating. “Within seconds, he had pulled the cap off with his teeth and inhaled and ingested it at the same time,” Robinson recounted, recalling the moments leading up to the emergency.
Following the inhalation, Dusty became unresponsive, prompting immediate medical attention. A family friend, Rochelle Evrard, shared on a GoFundMe page established to support the family that the decorative powder created a blockage in Dusty’s lungs as it mixed with moisture from his airways. “When the dust is mixed with water, it turns to paste — so it immediately blocked Dusty’s lungs,” Evrard explained.
Dusty’s condition required swift intervention, and he underwent emergency surgery to clear his lungs. Although he is now awake and showing signs of improvement, he remains in hospital care, supported by a feeding tube as he has yet to take a bottle. Doctors have warned that he may experience lifelong respiratory complications as a result of this incident, a prospect that weighs heavily on his family.
Robinson has been staying at a local Ronald McDonald House while Dusty receives ongoing treatment. “He is making progress each day,” she noted, but acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating that her son will require physiotherapy and possibly the services of an occupational therapist to aid in his recovery.
Despite the grim prognosis from medical staff, Robinson, along with family and friends, remains hopeful. “Doctors are saying he will likely have a lifelong injury to his lungs, but we’re hoping he proves them wrong,” she said, emphasising her determination to help her son overcome the obstacles.
